Newtown High School's girls' tennis team bounced back from a 5-2 loss to Joel Barlow of Redding on May 1 with a 5-2 victory over Brookfield the next day.

Newtown High School’s baseball team extended its winning streak to 11 games, highlighted by three consecutive shutouts. One trend spilled over into the next, beginning with the team’s fourth consecutive nine-run performance, a 9-0 blanking of Notre Dame-Fairfield on April 29.

Winners of four of five contests heading into the middle of this week — and thanks to owning tiebreakers over teams with similar records — the Newtown High School softball team appears poised to earn a first-round South-West Conference tournament home game. The Nighthawks will need to finish among the top four in the SWC to open the postseason on their familiar diamond.

Newtown High School’s boys’ volleyball team defeated a trio of Southern Connecticut Conference teams this past week. The Nighthawks beat visiting Cheshire 3-1, Amity 3-0, and Shelton 3-0.

Sure, the 19-2 win over South-West Conference opponent Immaculate of Danbury on April 25 is impressive and bolsters Newtown High School’s postseason standing, but losses to tough nonconference foes Guilford and Glastonbury in the following pair of contests stand to be more meaningful for the boys’ lacrosse team.

On Saturday, May 4, Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse team will hold a fundraiser in support of Connecticut referee Lew Socci, whose 12-year-old daughter, Mary, is bravely battling brain cancer. The Nighthawks will take on New Fairfield at Blue & Gold Stadium at 7 pm.

Although the South-West Conference competition, on the whole, has improved significantly in recent years, Newtown High School’s girls’ lacrosse team continues to dominate in some of its matchups. The Nighthawks had a 17-2 triumph at Immaculate of Danbury on April 25 and toppled visiting Bunnell of Stratford 14-4, at Blue & Gold Stadium on April 29 to improve to 8-1-1 overall.

Newtown High School’s girls’ golf team won two of three matches this past week. The Nighthawks visited Immaculate of Danbury on April 24 and lost. The Nighthawks shot a 223, and Immaculate carded a 217. Gigi Marino shot a 52, Abby Watson 54, Cailin Wilson 58, and Kendall Reed 59.
