During its annual meeting on September 13, The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Newtown Inc elected officers for the 2016-17 term.

Mary Tietjen was re-elected for another term as president, as was Anna Wiedemann as vice president.

Also elected that Tuesday morning were Deb Osborne, recording secretary; Maureen McLachlan, corresponding secretary; Rebeka Dahlgard, treasurer; Alice Falkowitz, assistant treasurer; and Mae Schmidle, parliamentarian.

These positions will remain in place until September 2017.

The board meets the first Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am. Having convened at Edmond Town Hall and Newtown Municipal Center in the past, the board has begun meeting at the recently opened headquarters of Newtown Volunteer Ambulance, 6 Washington Square.

The local chapter of VNA is a nonprofit organization focused on providing services and programs that contribute to the health and well-being of the residents of Newtown. The board of directors works closely with Bethel VNA and Danbury VNA to provide many of the services offered. It also works with Newtown Health District's director of health to address health issues, programs, and town needs.

Among its offerings, VNA Newtown provides flu shot clinics, blood pressure screenings, and preschool eye screenings.

VNA Newtown will be among the participants of Destination Newtown on Wednesday, September 28. Members will be administering flu shots during the event, which will be at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street, from 4 to 7 pm.

Partial funds for VNA Newtown are raised through its ongoing VNA Thrift Shop, located at Edmond Town Hall. Open September through July, Wednesdays from noon to 3 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to noon, the shop offers new and gently used clothing and household items, including collectibles.

According to Mae Schmidle, the shop is offering a promotion of 25 percent off all purchases during the month of September and October.

The VNA Thrift Shop is also home to the local organization's Loan Closet. Residents are invited to contact the shop, at 203-270-4377, to check on the availability of medical equipment including wheelchairs, shower seats, crutches, walkers, etc.
