Led by a pair of winning relays and trio of individual champions, Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team finished fifth in the South-West Conference championships, which culminated with the swimming events at Masuk High in Monroe on March 1.

Each time visiting Wethersfield made a run or hit a big shot Newtown High School’s girls’ basketball team had an answer in their Class LL State Tournament second-round matchup on March 1. The Nighthawks came away with a 51-41 victory to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.

Newtown High School wrestler Nik Accousti earned sixth place in the wrestling State Open, which was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, February 22 and 23.

Newtown High School’s gymnastics team came in fourth in the Class L state championship at Jonathan Law High in Milford on February 23.

A new basketball-playing option is coming to Newtown just in time for this season’s March Madness. AC Connecticut Basketball, led by Director Donnell Harvey, will be run out of NYA Sports & Fitness. AC Connecticut Basketball will include Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) teams, skills camps/ clinics, leagues, and more. The newly-formed AAU program will field teams U10 to U17, boys and girls, and offer children of various age groups the opportunity to compete in regional and state level tournaments.

Newtown High School’s girls’ basketball team followed up its conference championship with a first-round Class LL State Tournament victory as the fifth-seeded Nighthawks defeated No. 28 Manchester 54-30, at home, on February 26.

Newtown High School’s dance team followed its South-West Conference title with an L Division state championship, on February 23.

Not surprisingly, Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team gave host Bunnell of Stratford all it could handle for the better part of their South-West Conference tournament quarterfinal contest, on February 22. Ultimately, Bunnell’s accurate 3-point shooting helped pave the way to a 65-52 win.
