Newtown High School’s indoor track and field teams had some standout performances during the Class LL state championship meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on February 9.

For Newtown High School, the biggest point scored in the February 9 South-West Conference wrestling championships was actually one that went against the Nighthawks — by design. Heavyweight grappler Joe Zeller, in command of his pinnacle bout with a 7-0 advantage in the third period, allowed his opponent to escape for one point. That gave Zeller a waning-seconds opportunity for a two-point takedown and, thus, an eight-point differential, good for a major decision triumph.

Newtown High School’s gymnastics team had two of the top three all around competitors, led by South-West Conference championship MVP Hannah Jojo, and the Nighthawks edged Oxford for the title, at neutral site New Milford High, on February 7.

Looking to get back to its winning ways, Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team jumped out to an early lead and coasted past visiting Masuk of Monroe 81-41 on Senior Night, February 6.

When visiting Joel Barlow High School of Redding won the toss to begin the competition with Newtown on its Senior Night, February 4, it gained the advantage of selecting whether to announce odd or even numbered weight division wrestlers first.

Newtown High School’s girls’ basketball team arguably gives credence to the idea of a mercy rule like they have in baseball at some levels.

Newtown High School’s dance team put its moves together to earn South-West Conference championships in both the Jazz and Hip Hop categories, at New Milford High, on February 4.

Led by a pair of event wins by sprinter Carly Swierbut, Newtown High School’s girls’ indoor track and field team placed second in the February 2 South-West Conference championship meet, at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

They battle for three periods of hard-hitting — in the case of the most recent matchup, penalty-filled — fast-paced action on the ice. But the hockey programs from Newtown High School and Joel Barlow of Redding work together off the ice to raise money for Wounded Warrior Project. The players compete for the Warrior Cup, and money raised at the gate is contributed to Wounded Warrior Project.

Newtown High School’s football team’s path to the postseason just got a whole lot harder. The team’s out-of-conference schedule had been doubled to four games for the 2019 season, and two of them are perennial Southern Connecticut Conference and state-level powerhouses in Shelton and Fairfield Prep.
