On the ice, the Newtown High hockey team played in its second straight overtime contest, this time prevailing for its first win in four games to begin the campaign. Newtown edged the Eastern Connecticut Eagles 5-4 at Dayton Arena on the campus of Connecticut College in New London on December 29.

Scott McLean scored the game-winner as part of a four-point night. He also scored in regulation and assisted on two net-finders. Dom Cartelli, Sean Ferris, and Devin Marsh also scored for the Nighthawks. Matt Pelisson and Jack Hanley both added assists in the victory. Newtown goaltender Nick Chaloux made 15 saves.

The Nighthawks were coming off a 6-5 overtime loss to Stamford on December 23. Newtown is in the midst of four straight road games, the last of which will be at its shared home rink — Wednesday, January 14, against New Fairfield-Immaculate of Danbury, at 5:30 pm. The team’s next official home tilt is set for Saturday, January 17, when Horace Greeley of New York comes to Danbury for a 2 pm opening faceoff.
