Chess Tournament At C.H. Booth Library

A total of 24 chess players, divided into two sections, took part in a US Chess Federation sanctioned chess tournament, Saturday, May 16, at the C.H. Booth Library. The tournament was organized and directed by Glenn Budzinski of Newtown for the library and the Newtown Chess Club.

The “Open” section, open to all players, was won by Grandmaster Sergey Kudrin of Stamford, who finished with two wins and one draw. Mr Kudrin is the 16th highest ranked player in the United States.

The second section, open to players with US Chess Federation ratings of 1,600 or lower, and unrated players, was won by Newtown Chess Club member Brandon Huang, in a tie with Ryan Young of Stratford. Both players drew their individual game in the second round and ended with three wins and one draw each. Brandon is among the top 40 9-year-old players in the United States.
