A woman motorist who was fleeing from police on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 11, on the night of Thursday, March 16, became involved in two collisions - one with a Town of Southbury police car and the other with tractor-trailer truck, state police said.

State police said that at about 9:10 pm, a Southbury police officer was dispatched to investigate a report of a vehicle that had run into a snowbank on Southford Road (Route 67). After Southbury police freed that trapped Hyundai sedan from the snowbank, its driver, Yavonda Bradley, 42, of Danbury, drove away from the scene at a high speed, engaging police in pursuit on southbound Route 67, state police said.

State police said that the pursuit was quickly broken off because the identity of the Hyundai driver was known and there was a four-year-old male passenger in the Hyundai.

Several minutes later, Southbury police spotted the Hyundai traveling north on Route 67, after which the Hyundai attempted to travel in the wrong direction up the eastbound I-84 Exit 15 off-ramp, state police said. The Hyundai then turned around, drove back down that ramp, and entered westbound I-84's Exit 15 on-ramp, traveling in the correct direction, state police said.

State police said that three Southbury police officers and one state police officer followed the Hyundai onto I-84, but were not pursuing it.

On I-84, in Sandy Hook, between Exit 11's off-ramp and on-ramp, Bradley accelerated to a high speed and sideswiped a 2016 Ford Interceptor police car driven by Southbury police Officer John Jaskolka, 42, state police said.

After that impact, the Hyundai struck the rear end of the trailer on a 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer truck driven by David Gipson, 53, of Leesburg, Georgia, state police said.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Bradley and the Hyundai's child passenger to Danbury Hospital to be checked for possible injuries, state police said.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company firefighters responded to the accident scene on the highway, said Chief Bill Halstead. Chief Halstead said firefighters aided the ambulance crew at the scene and also spread absorbent materials on the road to control automotive fluid spills. Sixteen firefighters responded to the call.

The Hyundai received heavy damage in the collisions. State police said the incident is under investigation.
