Minivan vs SUV

Motorist Shanon Murray, 32, of Stratford, who was driving a 2015 Toyota Sienna minivan northward near 30 Main Street at about 2:31 pm on February 13, struck an unoccupied 2008 Acura MDX SUV, which was parked along the right road shoulder, police said. There were no injuries.

Police said they issued Murray an infraction for making a restricted turn and for illegal use of a handheld electronic device while driving.

Sugar Street Accident

A two-truck accident occurred on Sugar Street, near its intersection with Elm Drive, during the evening rush at about 5:17 pm on February 14.

Police said that both vehicles were traveling eastward on Sugar Street and both vehicles were slowing down, when one of the two vehicles struck the rear end of the other one. In that incident, motorist Todd Szegedy, 40, of Newtown, who was driving a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, struck the rear end of a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck driven by Eric Lindemann, 27, of Woodbury, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Szegedy for following too closely.

Two-Vehicle Collision At Four-Way Stop

Police report a two-vehicle collision at the four-way-stop intersection of Hattertown Road, Poverty Hollow Road, and Key Rock Road about 9:44 pm on February 14.

Motorist James O'Reilly, 24, of Redding Ridge, who was driving a 2002 Mazda Tribute SUV southward on Key Rock Road, stopped at a stop sign and then was proceeding straight through the intersection toward Poverty Hollow Road, as motorist Matthew Gilbert, 29, of Ridgefield, who was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta sedan and approaching the intersection, did not stop for a stop sign, resulting in the two vehicles colliding, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued an infraction to Gilbert for a stop sign violation.

Evading Responsibility

At about 9:10 pm on February 16, a man who was driving a 2015 Ford Expedition SUV stopped at a stop sign on Jordan Hill Road at its intersection with Berkshire Road, police said.

A person who was driving a dark red Volvo SUV eastward on Berkshire Road, then made a right turn onto Jordan Hill Road, but in doing so the Volvo struck the Ford. The unknown Volvo driver then kept traveling southward on Jordan Hill Road and fled the scene of the crash, police said.

The Ford's driver was not injured, police said. The Volvo has impact damage to its left front fender.

Police ask anyone who knows the Volvo driver's identity to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Rear-Ender

At about 8:04 am on February 17, motorist A.D. Battaglino, 54, of Derby, who was driving a 2011 Ford Econoline E-350 van westward on Berkshire Road, near Pole Bridge Road, slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by westbound motorist Samantha Diaz-Hennessey, 37, of Monroe, who was driving a 2013 Mazda 3 sedan, police said.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Diaz-Hennessey for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Intersection Crash

A two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of South Main Street and Ethan Allen Road about 8:23 am on February 17.

Police report that motorist Richard Bretton, 56, of Newtown, who was driving a 2008 Honda Pilot SUV, stopped at a stop sign on Ethan Allen Road at its intersection with South Main Street. At that time, motorist Adam Amheim, 36, of Monroe was driving a 2014 Honda Accord with two small child passengers northward on South Main Street and approaching the intersection, police said.

The Honda Pilot then attempted to exit Ethan Allen Road and turn left onto southbound South Main Street, but the two vehicles collided, police report.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps checked Bretton at the scene for a pain complaint but did not transport him, police said. Bretton received an infraction for making a restricted turn, police said.

Volvo vs Honda

Police report a two-vehicle collision on Church Hill Road in front of the driveway entrance to Blue Colony Diner about 2:33 pm on February 17.

The accident involved motorist Grace Frost, 29, of Newtown, who was driving as 2008 Volvo XC-70, and motorist Heidi Matheny, 17, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2013 Honda Pilot, according to police. There were no injuries.

Police said they issued Frost a written warning for failure to grant the right of way at a private driveway.

I-84 DUI

State police said they received several calls about a motor vehicle accident having occurred near Exit 10 of Interstate 84 about 10:52 pm on February 17, so they went to the area to investigate.

State police said they found that motorist Kyle Iott, 30, of Cheshire, who had been driving a 2006 Honda Pilot SUV westward on I-84, drove off the left side of the roadway, crossed the median and came to a stop near I-84's eastbound lanes. Iott was not injured.

After investigating, state police charged Iott with driving under the influence and with failure to drive in the proper lane. Iott was released on $500 bail for a March 10 court appearance.

Criminal Impersonation

State police report they spotted motorist Jevon Pegues, 23, of New Milford traveling at high speed on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 9, about 12:47 am on February 18, so they stopped him to investigate.

Pegues initially provided a false name and false date of birth, state police said. State police charged Pegues with criminal impersonation, driving with a suspended license, and speeding. Pegues posted $2,500 bail and is scheduled to appear for arraignment on the charges on March 17 in state Superior Court in Danbury.

State police said they released Pegues to New Milford police who had a warrant for his arrest.

DUI Arrest

Police report they were conducting a radar speed patrol in Hawleyville, near the intersection of Hawleyville Road and Old Hawleyville Road, at about 9:37 pm on February 19, when they spotted a 1998 Saturn SC-2 coupe swerving while being driven, so they stopped the vehicle to investigate.

Police said they charged motorist Suzanne Washanko, 59, of Naugatuck, with driving under the influence and with failure to drive in the proper lane. After processing, police released Washanko on $100 bail for a March 7 arraignment on the charges in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Drone Found

Police report they learned on the evening of February 21 that a drone had been found lying alongside Shepard Hill Road during the week of February 13. Police said they are holding the drone for safekeeping.

Police said that the flying device's owner may claim the drone at the police station at 3 Main Street by providing evidence of ownership.

Intersection Accident

Police report a two-vehicle accident on southbound South Main Street at its intersection with Mile Hill Road and Country Club Road about 11:29 am at February 20.

In that incident, motorist Jonathan Aluns, 29, of Waterbury, who was driving a Nissan NV-200 van, struck the rear end of a Subaru Outback driven by Daniel Morehouse, 29, of Newtown, police said. Ambulance staffers checked a passenger in Subaru for a possible injury, but made no transport, police said.

Aluns received a written warning for following too closely, according to police.

Off Both Sides Of The Road

Motorist Gustavo Amarante, 57, of Bridgeport was driving a 2014 Suzuki commercial truck northward on Hattertown Road at about 12:47 pm on February 20, when the vehicle drove off the right side of the road and struck curbside mailboxes at #143 and #141 Hattertown Road, after which it crossed the roadway and then went off the left road shoulder, striking a tree located between the driveways for #150 and #148 Hattertown Road, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Amarante an infraction for making an improper turn and for making a restricted turn.

Botsford Collision

Police report a two-vehicle collision at the busy intersection of South Main Street, Botsford Hill Road, and Meadowbrook Road in Botsford at about 6:39 pm on February 21.

Involved in that collision were motorist Maya Dougherty, 17, of Monroe, who was driving a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and motorist Sarah Cage, 30, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla, police report. There were no injuries. Dougherty received an infraction for making a restricted turn, according to police.

Police said they are seeking to identify the man in this surveillance photo who is shown exiting a Target store in Ansonia. Police said the man is suspected of attempting to open two credit card accounts by using the stolen personal information of a Newtown resident. The incidents occurred around January 21. Police ask anyone who knows the man to contact Officer Adam James at the police station at 203-426-5841 in regard to Case #2017-1895.
