Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS) announces a soccer double header at Newtown High School's Blue & Gold Stadium on Friday, May 6. The event will raise funds for peer-to-peer mentoring programs in the Newtown community.

The double header will begin at 6 pm, and the second game will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The New York Cosmos B team will face the West Chester United Soccer Club and will be followed by Newtown Pride FC taking on Reading United AC. Tickets are $5 for students, $7 for adults, and will be available at the gate.

Those interested in purchasing tickets in advance can do so by logging onto the NYFS website () and clicking on the Upcoming Events tab.newtownyouthandfamilyservices.org

All net proceeds from the event, including ticket sales, will go to Newtown Youth & Family Services. For more than 30 years the agency has provided mental health and community support services to the greater Newtown area. NYFS continues to provide after school activities, support groups, social groups for children with autism spectrum disorder, and programs for preschool, youth, and teens as well as provide financial assistance for counseling to children and families.

"NYFS is honored to be able to collaborate with the Newtown Pride to enhance the services we provide for the community," NYFS Executive Director Candice Bohr said. "There is no better way to develop a team partnership like that of Newtown Pride and NYFS than watching highly skilled teams work together for a common goal. Thank you to all four organizations for their support and helping us continue to fulfill our mission. We are looking forward to an exciting evening here in Newtown and bringing our whole community together for this great event as every dollar raised goes back in to our efforts in the community."

Mike Svanda, the coach of Newtown Pride, said he and the team are "so pleased this event has come to fruition.

"We are constantly thinking of ways to provide a real difference for our community," he continued. "We wanted to play soccer games to raise awareness and bring families together. This year, our goal is to play soccer to raise funds and awareness for Newtown Youth & Family Services, and to help implement programs for peer-to-peer mentoring. It is amazing to see these other organizations from across the region come together for this cause and it's an honor to be a part of this great event."

Blaise Santangelo of West Chester United said he and the team "are truly honored to be part of Soccer Night in Newtown and to help support Newtown Youth & Family Services.

"We recognize all of the wonderful things the Newtown Pride has done in the Newtown community over the last several years," he added. "The way they have used the beautiful game of soccer to raise awareness and funds has been inspiring."

Kyle Lyddy, a Newtown resident who is coordinating the event with NYFS and Newtown Pride FC, pointed out that Soccer Night in Newtown will assist in ensuring peer to peer mentoring programs continue.

"In the few years Newtown Pride has put on this event, they have raised more than $10,000 for local organizations to ensure their mission pushes forward," said Mr Lyddy. "We're excited to add to that tally to ensure services continue to be available for those who need them most."

Blue & Gold Stadium is on the campus of Newtown High School, 12 Berkshire Road in Sandy Hook.
