Newtown police arrested a Watertown man on the morning of Saturday, April 13, lodging five charges against him following a bizarre incident at a Church Hill Road residence.

Charged with driving under the influence, evading responsibility, disorderly conduct, second-degree criminal trespassing, and second-degree reckless endangerment is Joseph Vitus Achenbach, 35, of Watertown.

Police said they received a report about 8:20 am from the residents of a Church Hill Road home informing them that they had just returned from a shopping trip and entered their house to find a naked man, who was stranger to them, walking around inside the house.

“The residents immediately left the house and called police,” police said in a statement. Police officers arrived there soon and took the naked Achenbach into custody.

The police probe of the situation indicated that Achenbach had been driving a 2018 Ford Escape SUV, which entered the driveway of the residence, drove across a lawn, and then came to rest in a brushy area in the backyard. Achenbach then got inside the house by opening an unlocked sliding glass door, police said.

Achenbach’s clothing was not found, and it is thought that he was naked when the vehicular accident occurred. The Ford was towed from the scene. Police had Achenbach transported to the hospital to be checked out.

After being held on $5,000 bail for a time, that bail was posted for Achenbach, and he was released for an April 30 arraignment on the charges in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Lieutenant Aaron Bahamonde, who is the police department’s spokesman, offered a comment on the unusual incident,

“Obviously, this was a very terrifying situation for the homeowners, and we are very happy our officers were able to respond, in prompt manner, and apprehend the suspect without anyone getting hurt,” he said.

“We will not speculate as to the motive, but can say with certainty that alcohol and/or drugs played a role in Achenbach’s behavior,” Lt Bahamonde added.
