Warren Pinckney

Warren John Pinckney, 92, former resident of Sandy Hook, died April 27 at Pomperaug Woods in Southbury. He was the husband of Sheila Parkington Pinckney, who died in 2014. They were married for 62 years. Born January 27, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Anna Loretta (Stone) and Warren Jay Pinckney.

His two sons and their wives, David J. and Joyce Pinckney of Newtown and Robert W. and Barbara Pinckney of Franklin, Mass.; sister Ann F. Dunn of Garden City, Queens, N.Y.;and grandchildren Jason and his wife Niki, Michael, Jennifer, Leah, and Anna Pinckney survive him.

Mr Pinckney grew up in Richmond Hill, Queens, N.Y., and graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School. He was a PFC in the 66th Infantry Division of the US Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He survived the sinking of the troop ship SS Leopoldville, which had been torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of France on December 24, 1944.

He graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, with a BS in mechanical engineering. He was at the forefront of the computer and high tech industries; companies he worked for included Remington Rand, Pitney-Bowes, CBS, and IBM. Mr Pinckney held several patents for equipment used to produce semiconductors and computer chips. He retired as an advisory engineer from IBM in 1986 after spending more than 20 years in equipment engineering at IBM's East Fishkill, N.Y., facility.

Mr and Mrs Pinckney raised their family in Norwalk, Ridgefield, and New Fairfield, before retiring to Eastham (Cape Cod), Mass., in 1986. He kept active in retirement; he was a volunteer park ranger for the Cape Cod National Seashore, took up sailing, traveled throughout the United States by motorhome, and joined the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In 2004, Mr and Mrs Pinckney moved to Sandy Hook. At the age of 85, he became a mason and joined the Hiram Lodge of the Masonic Temple in Sandy Hook.

Mr Pinckney's interests included home improvement projects, boating, sailing, camping, model railroading, and radio controlled airplanes. He was active in church activities throughout his life. He was also a former committee man for Boy Scout Troop 42 in New Fairfield.

Calling hours are from 4 to 7 pm on Sunday, April 30, at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.

Funeral service is at 10 am Monday, May 1, at the Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road, Sandy Hook. Burial will follow at the Newtown Village Cemetery, 20 Elm Drive.
