To the Editor:

Over the past couple of decades I have had the privilege of witnessing Newtown's volunteer fire services on numerous occasions and have been continuously impressed by their commitment to our community. I have witnessed these men and women out in the middle of night in freezing cold temperatures as well as climbing ladders on a hot summer day, all to save us and our belongings. These men and women get out of bed in the middle of night and respond to our needs, not for money or fame, and many times not for even a thank you.

Those of you who have been unfortunate enough to have needed these people may realize the value they provide. However, most of us have been lucky enough to have not needed them - yet.

I have also become aware over the years as to the amount of time required for training and practice.

It is remarkable to me that these people volunteer so much of themselves to the greater benefit of all of us.

One of my earliest recollections in town was of four teenage members of Hook & Ladder working the St Rose Carnival and helping a small child that was lost and scared.

Since that time I have seen 25-35 volunteers drop everything and respond to fire and work professionally together to save a life, save an animal, or save a home. I am not now nor have I ever been a member of any of these organizations, I am just an observer.

By no means do I wish to detract from all of the other great volunteer organizations that work so hard all over town, I just wanted to highlight these men and women that have impressed me so much and say thank you.
