Volunteer Center Opportunities Available

The Volunteer Center is a leader in strengthening the greater Danbury community by connecting people to volunteer service. Some of the center’s current opportunities are outlined below.

Special Events

*Special Olympics Regional Games will take place on Saturday, May 9, in Danbury.

Many volunteers will be needed for any time during the hours of 8 to 5 to assist with setup, opening ceremonies, as athlete escorts, food service, timing, scoring, breakdown, etc.

Volunteers age 13 and up are invited to help.

*Still River Cleanup will take place on Saturday, May 16, starting at 7:30 am in Danbury.

Teams will work together along a three-mile section of the river and waterway. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. The minimum age to volunteer is 18.

*Gala event volunteers are needed on Saturday, May 16, at The Amber Room in Danbury, to assist Dream Come True of Western Connecticut with its 25th annual fundraising benefit.

*Camp volunteers are needed for a sleepaway camp in Warwick, N.Y., for children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.

Camp sessions are either July 25 to August 2 or August 6 to 14. Volunteers ages 19 and older are needed to be camp counselors or general operational helpers.

Experienced social workers or psychologists are also needed. Volunteers must be able to commit to one full session.

Other Opportunities

*Desk receptionists are needed to volunteer weekly (four hour shifts) at an emergency services agency in Danbury.

Volunteers must be comfortable on the phone, have legible handwriting, and be able to handle multiple tasks.

*Board member openings exist in many area nonprofit agencies.

If you are interested in assisting a nonprofit with its governance, please consider joining a board of directors.

*Blood drive volunteers needed to greet and register potential donors or to serve refreshments to the donors.

These opportunities are scheduled throughout the greater Danbury area and could be weekdays or weekends. The minimum age is 15.

Wish List

*Conference room furniture is needed for a local hospice program. They would like either one very large table or smaller tables that can be moved together.

They can also use 15–25 chairs.

All furniture should be in very good condition. They will provide a donation receipt.

*Homeless shelter residents need toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, bath towels, and washcloths to assist with their personal hygiene.
