Toes will be tapping and there just might be dancing in the aisles when the world famous Count Basie Orchestra brings its joyous and legendary sound to Newtown High School on Tuesday, May 9, to celebrate 70 years as the country’s premier swing and jazz band.

Formed in 1936 by William Basie, who later that year adopted the title of “Count,” the orchestra has played for presidents, royalty and millions of fans at jazz festivals and concerts across the globe. Known for its signature rhythm section, the band is now directed by Bill Hughes, who has had deep roots in the orchestra for more than 50 years. A trombone player with the band when it was directed by Count Basie, Mr Hughes still plays with the group, but he is also the fourth band leader since Basie’s death in 1984. He has been directing the troupe of talented musicians since 2003.

The 18-piece band also features Butch Miles, and vocals are provided by Melba Joyce.

The winner of more Grammy Awards than any other big band in history, the ensemble has endured through the years, thrilling audiences with classic swing numbers such as “One O’clock Jump,” as well as state-of-the-art solos. Its latest collection, Basie is Back, was recorded in Japan in October and will be released in late May.

The concert will begin at 7:30 pm with a special performance by the Newtown High School Jazz Ensemble.

Tickets are $25 for adults, or $25 for seniors and students. All seats are general admission.

To reserve tickets, call 270-4644, extension 2263, or send email to NHSBasie@yahoo.com.

The concert is a benefit for the Newtown High School Band Parents Corporation.
