Jeanne Bryan Insalaco sent us a link to her Weekend Weathervanes blog, featuring our very own bee weathervane. Jeanne stopped by the end of May to photograph the weathervane and has put together a nice history. You can check it out at everyonehasafamilystorytotell.wordpress.com/2017/06/03/weekend-weathervanes-the-newtown-bee/.The Bee office this week. We were all sad to learn that office dog Rosie had been released from her earthly life this past weekend. May she rest in peace, surrounded by tennis balls, sneakers, a soft couch, and all the good smells a dog would love.Bee Education Reporter Eliza Hallabeck on her upcoming wedding day. May she and her beloved share many happy years together!

A recent "Way We Were" photo, identified by The Newtown Historical Society as being Dead Man's Curve along Route 25, offered a view of a curving road with one house to its side. Longtime residents Sam Scott, Jr, and Judy La Croix believe that the photo is a view taken

The Newtown Food Truck Festival on Saturday, June 17, needs volunteers for the following: vendor load in, 8:30 to 11:30 am; parking (locations at Fairfield Hills, Reed School, and the Horse Guard), 10:30 am to 6 pm; trash during the event (three floating volunteers and two at handwashing stations needed); and cleanup, 4:30 to 6 pm. A message from the town clerk's office reminds all dog owners in town that it is that time of the year: all dogs (but no cats) over the age of 6 months must be licensed on or before June 30. The license is valid from July 1 through June 30 of next year. Licenses will not be issued without proof of current rabies vaccination. Please provide proof that the dog has been neutered or spayed so that you can get the bargain rate for a neutered/spayed dog of just $8; the fee for an unaltered dog is $19. There is a $1 late fee, per month, after June 30. New to town? Bring that Connecticut town's current license to the town clerk's office at 3 Primrose Street in Fairfield Hills. For a $1 fee, you will receive a Newtown dog license and a new tag number. (If Fido loses his tag, don't fret; it can be replaced for a fee of 50 cents.)

Gardeners who love extraordinary, unusual plants must hurry on over to Fairfield Hills this Saturday, June 10. Taunton Press's Fine Gardening magazine is hosting a "Super Cool Plant Sale," from 9 am to 3 pm. It's open to the public and free - unless you're an early bird. From 8 to 9 am, there is a $10 entrance fee. All plants are selected by Fine Gardening staff, and Broken Arrow Nursery and Opus Plants will be on hand with some pretty amazing items.

Anyone who is as curious as a cat about all the digging and sidewalk work going on in Sandy Hook center should know that, according to SHOP President Michael Burton, the work is part of repairs that are being covered by an insurance claim by the town following a raging car fire last year that did damage to both the bridge and sidewalk surface. Crews are also taking advantage of the opportunity to pull up and replace some additional pieces of the sidewalk that have been deteriorating from heavy concentrations of snow melt chemicals. That work is also being done under an existing sidewalk maintenance budget, Mr Burton said, so there is no additional cost to taxpayers for any of the work that was happening in the area of the Pootatuck bridge about a week ago.

Another bit of action you may notice is the seeding of the High Meadow at Fairfield Hills. Working with DEEP, the Conservation Commission plans to sow wildflower and grass seeds on that plot in the coming week. Providing an environment that is beneficial to pollinators, birds, and wildlife is the goal of the commission - and visitors to the area will reap the benefits of the beauty when the flowers bloom and the grasses grow, as well.

Owner Martine Shanchuk invites the public to a book signing at A Gift Box - the new store at 14 Church Hill Road, formerly Down On Main Street - on Saturday, June 10, from 11 am to 3 pm. Waterbury native and Fordham University graduate Samantha D'Angelo - and granddaughter of a Gift Box employee - will sign copies of her book, The Teen Girls Guide To Becoming Herself. Enjoy light refreshments and take a look around one of Newtown's newest businesses.
