Are you hearing the Old McDonald song in your head - a chick chick here, a chick chick there? Then Sunday with the Sanctuary has just the program for you. The Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation event is scheduled for March 26, from noon until 2 pm, in the meeting room of the C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street. "Rabbit & Chicken Care 101" will help you understand the needs and care of those bunnies and chicks you hope to make part of your backyard farm. Learn how to properly care for rabbits and chickens from experts representing House Rabbit Connection and Kimberly McClure Brinton, DVM. Contact info@cvhfoundation.org to register for the free program.montec13@gmail.com. andycluff@yahoo.com or call 203-994-4850. The award-winning Harmony on The Sound Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International that sings four-part women's a cappella harmony in barbershop style, will be holding a fundraiser at Edmond Town Hall next weekend. The chorus has approximately 75 members, including six Newtown residents, and the group rehearses on the Trumbull/Bridgeport line. On Friday, March 31, the group will be in the gymnasium of Edmond Town Hall, presenting a Bunco Night. Admission is $25 - in advance - and will include games, raffles, and prizes, and refreshments. Attendees are welcome to BYOB. Harmony on the Sound hosted a similar event about 18 months ago, according to Newtown resident and chorus member Colleen McMorran, and the ladies are hoping to have even more players join them this month. For additional information about Bunco Night or to reserve a spot for play, send an e-mail to

It's #LoboWeek at the Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo. Find out about the importance of wolves on the landscape of the Southwest, from March 26 to April 1. #LoboWeek marks 19 years since 11 captive-reared Mexican gray wolves were released into the wild in Arizona and New Mexico as part of a federal reintroduction program under the Endangered Species Act. Missing from the landscape for more than 30 years, returning the Mexican gray wolf, or "lobo," to the wild was a significant milestone for the lobo and wildlife conservation efforts. The zoo is home to two Mexican gray wolves, and two red wolves, all extremely rare and on the Endangered Species list. Learning opportunities and activities will be held all week. Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo is at 1875 Noble Avenue, Bridgeport.

Who knows the Girl Scout Promise now? Senator Tony Hwang, or so I hear. Newtown Troop 51170 Girl Scout Ambassador Riley Smith and her mother, Heather, recently traveled to Hartford and were welcomed to the historic State Senate Chamber by Sen Hwang. Riley sat in The Charter Oak Chair in the Senate Chamber, also called "The Wishing Chair," carved in 1857 from the fallen Charter Oak tree. That tree harbored the 1687 self-governing charter given to the Connecticut colony by King Charles II in 1662. The Charter was hidden to prevent British officials from returning it to King James II. Those who take tours of the State Capitol are allowed to sit in "The Wishing Chair" and make a wish - but I was not privy to Riley's wish. Sen Hwang was pinned as a member of the Honorary Troop at the Capitol - and recited the Girl Scout Promise with other honorary troop members.

March 21 was World Forestry Day, and the Newtown Forest Association reminds you that while the world celebrates the forests once a year, the NFA does this locally every day of the year. "The NFA now protects over 1,300 acres that largely consist of forest lands, and are maintained to clean the air we breath and the drinking water that filters into our wells and the aquifer for those on public water," according to a recent release. It's not too late to hug a tree this week, I might add.

Ben's Lighthouse and Al's Angels will be the beneficiaries of The Art of Giving Back art show this Saturday, March 25, from 6 to 8 pm, at Saugatuck Sweets in Fairfield, if you are looking to take a ride a little further down county. Local artists' works (mainly paintings and photographs) will be auctioned off and proceeds will support Ben's Lighthouse, a local organization founded by the family of Ben Wheeler, who was killed in the 12/14 tragedy, and which "helps the community affected by the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy by establishing programs that empower young people and help them share their own light," and Al's Angels, a charity providing assistance "to children and families facing illness, domestic violence, and financial hardship." The event will display the art, and offer wine and light snacks. Saugatuck Sweets is at 28 Reef Road. Don't worry if this weekend doesn't work for you: a repeat of The Art of Giving Back is planned for Sunday, April 23, from 1 to 6 pm, at the 575 Riverside Avenue location of Saugatuck Sweets, in Westport, and will feature the music of Alex Wintz on the guitar.

It seems no one has responded to information in last week's Bee regarding the desperate need for new Labor Day Parade Committee members, as former members are once again pleading for others to step up, before it is too late to plan the 2017 Labor Day Parade. Without essential positions on the committee filled, there will not be an end of summer extravaganza that thousands look forward to each year. A meeting is scheduled for 6 pm, Wednesday, March 29, in the Newtown Savings Bank community room. Anyone interested can contact Andy Cluff at

If I could grab a pencil with my paws, I'd be happy to draw a picture of my mom, whiskers and all. There are, no doubt, plenty of young artists out there with the ability to do so, though, and The Newtown Bee invites all to "Draw A Picture of Mom." Send a colored drawing of your mother to The Newtown Bee, PO Box 5503, Newtown CT 06470 or drop it off at our 5 Church Hill Road office anytime before Monday April 3. Pictures - with the mother and child's first names only - will be published in a special Mother's Day section of the May 5 edition of the paper, and in The Bee Extra.

Looking ahead: Join in a Zumba Fitness Master Class at Lathrop School of Dance, Sunday, April 30, 2 to 4 pm, at Edmond Town Hall. Dance and win items in a post-class raffle. (Raffle tickets sold at the class.) $8 for ZIN members (printout or phone with current ZIN membership) or $10. Money raised will go to Lathrop School of Dance's friend Ante Polic, fundraising for Re-Walk equipment. E-mail

Anyone and everyone should know that I'll be out and about seeking next week's news. Be sure to... Read me again.
