'The Dangers Of Vaping & Underage Drinking,' April 4

Alcohol use by persons under age 21 years is a major public health problem. Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs, and is responsible for more than 4,300 deaths among underage youth annually.dropyourpride.org, "began the destructive cycle of drinking and driving."

In addition, new research has emerged on the health consequences that stem from the vaping trend.

On Tuesday, April 4, Newtown Prevention Council will host a free presentation on the dangers of vaping and underage drinking. It will begin at 7 pm at Newtown Middle School, 11 Queen Street.

Susan Richards from St Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport will speak about the vaping trends and the harm it can do. Ms Richards is the SmokeStoppers program instructor for St Vincent's Medical Center Foundation.

In addition, Aaron Cooksey will present on the repercussions of his actions from 16 years ago.

Mr Cooksey's story is about himself as a young athlete who graduated from high school without touching any drugs and/or alcohol. He then faced a terrible injury that prevented him from playing sports any longer. One month before his college football debut, Mr Cooksey tore his ACL. Shortly after that he had his first drink of alcohol. He then, according to his website,

With too much free time on his hands, Mr Cooksey found himself on a road of disparity where he lost his best friend and ultimately spent four years in a state penitentiary. He also lost his driver's license for life. Upon his release Mr Cooksey turned his life around and accomplished several of his goals.
