Swim And Dive Squad Has Strong Performances In State Championships

Newtown High School's girls' swimming and diving team placed 11th among 20 schools to score in the Class LL State Championships, November 10 and 16. First, the diving championships took place at Middletown High School and the swim finals were held at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. The Nighthawks scored 225 points. Greenwich, with 854, was first.

The Hawks were led by Mary Hufziger, who set the school record in the 100 yard freestyle race, placing second in the meet with a time of 51.93.

Newtown's 200 medley relay team of Hufziger, Maddie Carter, Olivia Renkert, and Julia DiMartino was eighth in 1:56.57. Renkert was 19th in the 200 individual medley race, finishing in 2:21.93. In the diving competition, Kiera Sughrue was eighth with a score of 340.25. Diver Sarah MacMullan was 15th with a score of  298.80.

Carter was 16th in the 100 butterfly race, making her final touch in 1:02.70, and Renkert placed 22nd in the event with a time of  1:04.53. Newtown's 200 free relay of Lianna Perazzo, Amanda Berry, Emma Riebe, and Carter came in 12th in 1:47.69. Hufziger was seventh in the 100 backstroke event, clocking in at 59.22. In the 100 breaststroke, Carter came in eighth with a time of 1:12.46. The 400 free relay squad, comprising  DiMartino, Alex Ferris, Riebe, and Hufziger, was 12th in 3:53.67.

The season continues for the top performers, who will represent the school in the State Open at Yale University in New Haven, on November 19.
