Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball, field hockey, and girls’ and boys’ soccer teams all qualified for state tournament action, which gets going on Monday, November 3, and Tuesday, November 4. Only the volleyball squad earned a first-round home match; the others will have to prove their mettle on the road to advance into second-round play.

The volleyball team (14-4 during the regular season) earned the Class LL bracket’s ninth seed and will host No. 24 Hamden (8-12) at 6 pm on November 3. The winner advances to take on either No. 8 Southington or No. 25 Bristol Central in the second round, scheduled to be played at the home of the highest seed, at 6 pm on November 6.

Newtown’s field hockey team (7-9) earned the Class L’s 19th seed and will have a qualifying-round clash with No. 14 Southington (10-6) at 2 pm on November 3. The team that comes out on top will visit third-seeded New Milford in the first round, at 2 pm on November 5.

Both soccer teams had winning records but will have to win away from their familiar home digs. The boys (8-4-3) earned the LL tourney’s No. 18 ranking and will take on No. 15 Glastonbury (10-4-2), at 2 pm on November 3. The winner visits No. 2 Fairfield Ludlowe in the second round, at 2 pm on November 5.

On the girls’ pitch, the Nighthawks will tangle with a very familiar foe: South-West Conference rival New Milford. Newtown is the No. 22 seed and New Milford is the No. 11 team in the Class LL playoffs. The teams will have a first-round battle at 2 pm on Tuesday, November 4. The winner will take on either No. 6 Fairfield Warde or No. 27 Conard at 2 pm on November 6. Newtown went 6-5-5 and New Milford was 10-3-3 in the regular campaign. One of the ties these teams came away with was a 1-1 deadlock between the rivals in New Milford on September 30. New Milford earned the SWC’s third seed before going to claim the conference championship with a win over top-seeded Masuk of Monroe in the pinnacle game.

Michael Cook and the NHS boys' soccer team will begin state tourney play on Monday, November 3, when the Nighthawks visit Glastonbury for a 2 pm game.
