As the summer heats up, lemonade stands will begin sprouting in neighborhoods.

While some kids are using lemonade stands for some extra change, Newtown Kindness, a non-profit organization whose goal is to foster kindness in children, has created a lemonade stand revolution with a catch: the kids who are doling out the sweet drinks are not asking for any money. They are simply performing a random act of kindness in hopes that their visitors will pass it on to somebody else.

Charlotte’s Lemonade Stand was launched in July 2013 by Newtown Kindness to kick off a “Summer of Giftivism.” The concept of giftivism is the practice of radically generous acts that together can change the world.

Instead of accepting money, children offered free advice along with each cup of lemonade they hand out. Following the Newtown Kindness motto of “Think Kindly, Act Boldly,” children handed out cups of lemonade and reminded others to just be kind. Children in and around Newtown quickly accepted the challenge. Dozens of lemonade stand starter kits were picked up, and hundreds — perhaps thousands — of cups of lemonade were handed out last summer.

Newtown Kindness is hoping that Charlotte’s Lemonade Stand participants will again encourage the start of a chain of giving this summer. The organization is giving away free lemonade stand starter kits complete with lemonade mix, pitchers, a welcome letter, and Random Act of Kindness Cards to remind visitors to pass along a good deed to others.

Charlotte’s Lemonade Stand kits will be handed out by volunteers on Saturday, June 28, from 10:30 am to 3 pm. Newtown Kindness volunteers will be stationed outside Stop & Shop in Sand Hill Plaza, 228 South Main Street.

There is no charge for the lemonade stand starter kits.

Newtown Kindness is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded subsequent to the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, in an effort to encourage, facilitate, and recognize the value of kindness. Named to honor the memory of Charlotte Bacon, one of the children killed that morning, the organization’s mission is to promote kindness as a guiding principle of humanity.

Charlotte’s Lemonade Stand starter kits include Random Act of Kindness cards that children can hand to those who visit their lemonade stands.
