Squeaky Clean Fun Day

HARTFORD — In conjunction with its current exhibition “Art We Clean Yet? A Lighthearted Look at The Pursuit of Cleanliness Over Two Centuries,” Connecticut Historical Society will present a program for its younger visitors on Sunday, January 16.

From 2 to 4 pm, children can take part in “Squeaky Clean Fun Day,” including hands-on activities including making soap crayons to take home with them. There will also be visits to “Art We Clean Yet?” which explores Connecticut’s contribution to the American pursuit of cleanliness.

Visitors can see artifacts like early 20th century washing machines, floor sweepers and bathroom “ingenuities” next to their modern counterparts. Seen next to the modern Roomba™ Robotic Floorvac, the Leader Suction Cleaner (made in Hartford in 1910) seems quirky and funny.

Interactives for the whole family are supplemented with vintage videos that highlight the humorous and innovative ways keeping clean has been sold to the public.

Admission to “Squeaky Clean Fun Day” is included with regular museum admission of $6 for adults, and $4 for seniors, college students and visitors ages 6 to 17 (children ages five and under are always admitted free).

Reservations are requested; call 860-236-5621 extension 238. The museum is at One Elizabeth Street (at the corner of Asylum Avenue).
