Newtown High School's softball team began the season with a 21-2 triumph over host Darien on March 30. Angela Carriero drove in more than a third of the Nighthawk runs, knocking in eight with a grand slam, two-run double, and two-run single. Carriero also scored four runs.

In a grand start to the campaign, the Newtown High School baseball team plated seven runs in the first inning on the way to a 13-2 triumph at nonconference foe Foran of Milford on March 30.

Newtown High School’s girls’ outdoor track and field team is coming off a South-West Conference championship last spring and striving to pick up where it left off.

Winners of the South-West Conference championship in three of the last four years, Newtown High School’s girls’ golf team is rebuilding following the graduation of six seniors — including standout Sarah Houle — last year.

Keeping the ball out of the net is not an easy thing to do in girls’ lacrosse, where high scoring games are the norm. Newtown High School’s lineup, however, features a wealth of experienced returning defenders, so the Nighthawks will look to keep opposing offenses under control as they battle in an increasingly-challenging South-West Conference.

For almost every one of the five starters/regulars Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse team lost to graduation, it effectively gained a player with the return of someone who was sidelined due to injury for all or much of last year.

Striving for an impactful encore to last season’s South-West Conference championship run, Newtown High School’s boys’ volleyball team has its sights set on not only repeating as conference champs but also claiming bragging rights at the state level as well.
