Newtown High School's girls' basketball team was shooting the ball lights out. You could say the Nighthawks were on fire. But a transformer in town was on fire, causing the gymnasium lights to go out, resulting in the February 21 South-West Conference tournament quarterfinal clash between NHS and New Milford to be postponed at the half.

Newtown High School's boys' basketball team spoiled Weston's Senior Night with a 49-36 win on February 20. Up next, the Nighthawks will look to celebrate their own Senior Night festivities with a win over Bunnell of Stratford.

It’s been quite a run of success for Newtown High School’s hockey team of late — the Nighthawks are riding a five-game winning streak as they get right into the thick of things in the conference playoff hunt.

Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team built a big lead and fended off a hard-working New Fairfield team for a 68-60 win at home on February 18. The Nighthawks bounced back from a 59-42 loss at Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on February 14 and are in a handful of teams battling it out for one of the top spots and a first-round home game in the upcoming South-West Conference tournament.

Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team defeated the visiting New Fairfield Rebels 93-82 on Senior Night, February 18. Rick Irving set the pool record in the 100-yard freestyle race, making his final touch in 48.52 for one of Newtown’s many first-place finishes.

Newtown High School's wrestling team put together a strong showing, its depth on display, with a tournament-best eight place winners — including an individual champ — on the way to a second-place finish in the South-West Conference championships at Pomperaug High on February 15.

Newtown High School's gymnastics teams competed in the South-West Conference championships at New Milford High on February 13. The Nighthawks were third overall and first as a team on the balance beam.

Four Newtown High School students will represent Team Connecticut in the annual High School Alpine Regional Championships at Cannon-Mittersill Mountain in New Hampshire on March 5-8, and they all happen to be from the same family.

Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team overcame a seven-point deficit heading to the fourth quarter and defeated visiting New Milford 52-50 on February 6. The win came two days following a hard-fought 54-53 loss to Immaculate of Danbury.
