Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team highlighted its 94-87 win over visiting New Milford on October 9 with a pair of pool record-setting performances.

Newtown High School's girls' and boys' cross country teams raced against visiting Pomperaug of Southbury in their season-starting meets, at the Reed School trails on October 6.

The rules may be vastly different, but the result was a familiar one, with Newtown High School’s football team again putting forth a dominating effort against a South-West Conference foe. The Nighthawks won their first 7 versus 7 game/strongman competition in a 39-0 triumph at Pomperaug of Southbury, on October 2.

Competing at its home pool while the opposition swam at their home venues as part of coronavirus restrictions, Newtown High School's girls' swimming and diving team came out on top 96-85 in a season-opening meet with Pomperaug of Southbury on October 2, and 99-76 in a meet with Brookfield on October 6.

Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team defeated visiting Pomperaug of Southbury 2-0 for a Senior Day victory in the season opening contest, and first-year Head Coach Ryan Lyddy’s debut, at Blue & Gold Stadium on October 1.

Three matches into the season, Newtown High School’s girls’ soccer team has a close loss (1-0 to Pomperaug of Southbury in the season-opener, on October 1), and two ties — a 3-3 draw with Bethel two days later, and a scoreless deadlock with New Milford in the team’s first home game, at Blue & Gold Stadium, on October 6.

Newtown High School's field hockey team had a tough test to begin the slate and the Nighthawks scored a hard-earned 3-2 victory at Pomperaug of Southbury on October 1. NHS followed up that win with a pair of blowout victories.

A lot of elements of the game — defense, strong net play, accurate placement by the setter to name a few — can set the tone in a volleyball match. But it all starts with serves. After all, a well-placed hit to put the ball into play might not even get returned or will be sent back over the net without authority, allowing the serving team to rack up points and maintain momentum.

This season, the cross country teams have a goal to simply to reach the season’s finish line.
