In 2019, Habby Farah brought the Newtown Tennis Association’s Tennis Open back to town after it was on the shelf for a season and had only been held once over the course of a decade.

Newtown High School’s girls’ lacrosse program begins the season with a small roster of 26 team members, a handful of whom are sidelined because of coronavirus protocol.

It may be a couple years removed from the last time Newtown High School’s baseball team has been on the diamond, but Coach Ian Thoesen is optimistic his squad can build off the success it had back in 2019.

Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team placed fourth in the South-West Conference championships, held virtually in late March.

High school indoor track teams, including Newtown’s squads, only had an opportunity to compete a few times in March once the sport’s “high risk” coronavirus protocol label was lifted, but the teams made the most of the truncated season and capped things off by tallying final-meet results for South-West Conference individual event champions.

In a year during which social distancing and coronvirus concerns kept some families apart and prevented some teams from finishing what they started, rivals from Newtown and New Fairfield high schools joined forces on the ice for what turned out to be a special hockey season.

Newtown High School sophomore Lauren Jacobs took first place overall at the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League (CISL) Girls State Open ski competition on March 15 at Mount Southington.

The Newtown-New Fairfield co-op hockey team edged Milford 3-2 in the SCC/SWC tournament semifinals, at Milford Ice Pavilion, on March 25. With the win, the Nighthawks advance to the Saturday, March 27, title game.
