The second and final session of Newtown Continuing Education's SMART (Summer Music and Art) camp began the week of July 17 and concludes with a student showcase for parents on Friday, July 28.

SMART Camp Program Director Stephanie Cardwell said July 19 that everything was running smoothly for the second session. Students were busy in classrooms across Sandy Hook Elementary School, where the program is housed this summer, in different programs. Students who signed up for SMART Camp chose from a number of classes to take during the two-week sessions. The first session ran July 3 to 14.

Inside the Fused Glass Fused Fun class, taught by Kelly Makuch, students were working to create pieces for a "family tree." Each piece of fused glass art the students created would be attached to strings and strung together to hang like a mobile. Each piece, Ms Makuch said, would represent a different aspect of their family or home.

In Icky Sticky Ooey Gooey Chemistry instructor Amy Pantaleo was overseeing students as they drew on sheets to make tie dye bandanas. Other class activities during the session included making volcanoes and making ice cream and butter.

Downstairs in the school's art room Pottery Creation instructor Roberta Ahuja worked with students as they made pinch pots. Ms Ahuja said each student was using his/her imagination to create a different design.

Other classes offered in SMART this summer included Animals in Art Through Time, STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math) Explorers, Jewelry Design, Mosaics, and Creative Cooking.
