SCAN Spring Show Opens Sunday, May 1

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN), Inc. will present its 35th Annual Juried Spring Art Show at Cyrenius H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street in Newtown, from May 1 until May 8.

The show will present work by SCAN members and non-members in oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, graphics, mixed media, printmaking, and sculpture (no photography).

The show will open on Sunday, May 1, with reception and award ceremony from 2 to 4 pm; awards will be presented at 3.

Best in Show will be awarded $300. In addition, over $1,000 in cash prizes plus merchandise prizes will also be awarded.

The show’s co-chairmen are Will Doyle (203-438-8311) and Michael Agius.

While he will not be in the competition for a juried award, Mr Doyle will be showing his oil painting “Hudson River Tugs,” which was the winner of Kent Art Association’s Fall 2004 Juried Show award for Best Marine Painting in Any Medium.

The artist was boating out of Rondout Creek near Kingston, N.Y., at 6 am one morning when he spotted a collection of tugboats and barges by the entrance to the Hudson River.

“The scene hit me so hard,” said Mr Doyle. “[It was] a beautifully simple composition of complex objects – just reds, greens and grays in the stillness of the early morning haze. … I made some quick sketch notes and shot a couple of pictures, and it was gone. … But I couldn’t get it out of my head – or wait to get back to the studio and grab my brushes.”

C.H. Booth Library is at 25 Main Street in Newtown. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 am to 8 pm; Tuesday and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm; Friday from noon to 5 pm; and Sunday, 1 to 5 pm.
