Attempted Shoplifting Of Produce

Police report that at about 2:38 pm on October 13, they received a report of attempted shoplifting at the Stop & Shop supermarket at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street, so they responded to investigate the complaint.

Police said that Joseph Santacrocce, 34, of Newtown attempted to steal from that store various produce valued at $128. Police charged him with criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny. Santacrocce was scheduled to appear in court to answer the charge.

Dispute, Disorderly Conduct

Police report they responded to a Mt Pleasant Road home in Hawleyville at about 9 pm on October 14, after learning that a dispute had occurred there.

After investigating, police charged Raymond Keiser, 47, of Newtown and Christine Hosking, 51, of Derby each with disorderly conduct. Police said they released each person on $1,000 non-surety bail for October 27 court appearances.

Multiple Charges

At about 1:45 pm on October 15, on northbound South Main Street, near its intersection with Button Shop Road, motorist Manoj Gujjula, 24, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse, struck the vehicle ahead of him, which was a 2004 Buick Century driven by Helen Kekes, 63, of Newtown, police report.

The impact pushed the Buick off the road, causing it to strike a curb, after which it skidded down the road and came to rest in the intersection, police said.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene to assess Kekes for possible injuries, police said.

Police said they charged Gujjula with reckless driving, failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, traveling too fast for conditions, and driving without a license. Gujjula was scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges.

Minivan vs SUV

Police report a two-vehicle collision on Church Hill Road near The Boulevard about 8:45 am on October 18.

Westbound motorist Heather Jones, 43, of Southbury, who was driving a 2016 Mazda CX-9 SUV, stopped and was then struck from behind by westbound motorist Melinda Cash, 37, of Newtown, who was driving a 2008 Honda Odyssey minivan, police report.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Cash for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Church Hill Road Mishap

At about 10:53 am on October 19, motorist Judy Lacroix, 67, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2003 Ford Ranger pickup truck eastward on Church Hill Road, near its intersection with The Boulevard, as motorist Blanca Panza, 33, of Danbury, who was driving a 2015 Toyota RAV-4 SUV, was attempting to exit a driveway to head eastward on Church Hill Road, police report.

The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Panza a written warning for failure to yield the right of way.

Collision In Sandy Hook

Police said that at about 10 am on October 20, motorist Theresa Viesto, 25, of Newtown, who was driving a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder SUV, struck the rear end of a 2016 Toyota RAV-4 SUV, on Wasserman Way, near the Exit 11 ramps for Interstate 84.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Viesto for following too closely.

Four Vehicles Collide

State police report a four-vehicle collision on eastbound Interstate 84 about 6 pm on October 20. All four vehicles were traveling in the left lane of two lanes when the chain-reaction accident occurred, state police said.

In that incident, a 2012 Toyota Prius driven by Mary Michaud, 24, of Exeter, N.H., struck the rear end of a 2012 Toyota Scion TC driven by John Leonardo, 26, of Waterbury, state police said. That impact then caused the Scion to strike the rear end of a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Shane Thomas, 25, of Danbury, resulting in the Chevrolet striking the rear end of a 2016 Subaru Outback driven by Christina Davis, 53, of Sandy Hook, state police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported motorists Leonardo and Thomas to be checked at hospitals for suspected minor injuries, state police said.

After investigating, state police issued Michaud an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Truck vs Truck

State police report a two-truck accident on eastbound Interstate 84 about 8 pm on October 20.

In that incident, which occurred on a section of roadway that is three lanes wide, trucker James Worde, 69, of Trumbull, who was driving a Volvo tractor-trailer truck in the right lane, attempted to merge into the center lane, but struck a 2016 Freightliner CA-1 truck driven by Keith McNealy, 40, of Williamsport, Penn., state police said.

There were no injuries. Worde received a written warning for a moving violation, state police said.

Car Hits Rails

About 9:42 pm on October 20, motorist Kaela Maringola, 20, of Waterbury, was driving a 2005 Hyundai Elantra on the Exit 10 on-ramp for eastbound Interstate 84 during wet conditions when the auto went out of control, went off the left road shoulder, and struck some flex-beam guardrailing, state police said.

There were no injuries. Maringola received a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions, state police said.

Hyundai vs Guardcables

State police said motorist Lindsay Johanson, 30, of Monroe, who was driving a 2008 Hyundai Elantra about 11:15 am on October 21 on the Exit 10 on-ramp for westbound Interstate 84, when the vehicle went out of control, entered the right road shoulder, and struck some guardcables.

There were no injuries. Johanson received a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions, state police said.

DUI Arrest

Police report that at about 10:20 pm on October 21, while on stationary radar patrol near 188 South Main Street, they spotted a red Acura heading southward on that street at high speed, after which they stopped the vehicle near 228 South Main Street to investigate.

Police said they charged motorist Raymond Rzasa, 63, of Trumbull, with driving under the influence and with speeding. Police said they released Rzasa for November 8 court appearance on the charges.

Warrant Arrest

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Artur Godlewski, 32, of Bethel, went to the police station on the morning of October 25 and was charged with evading responsibility with a motor vehicle, failure to drive in the proper lane, and failure to have automotive insurance, police said.

Police said the charges stem from their investigation into an incident that occurred on the night of August 17 on Taunton Hill Road.

Police report they held Godlewski on $750 bail for an appearance on October 25 in state Superior Court in Danbury.

State police report a two-vehicle accident on westbound Interstate 84 involving two SUVs at about 3:11 pm on Wednesday, October 26. State police said motorist Michael Maddox, 46, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2008 Cadillac Escalade in the right lane on the highway, as a 2009 Nissan Murano driven by Marisol Haynes, 45, of Newtown was entering the highway from the Exit 10 on-ramp and then beginning to merge into the right lane. The two vehicles were then involved in a sideswipe collision, state police said. Maddox was transported to Danbury Hospital by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Maddox was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said. Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters went to the accident. State police said they issued Haynes an infraction for making an unsafe lane change. (Bee Photo, Hicks)
