Four Warrants

Newtown police report they charged Ian Gingell, 25, of Monroe on four warrants on the night of February 28, arresting him on four separate counts of violation of probation.

Two of those charges were pressed by Newtown police, with Monroe police and state police pressing the other two charges, police said. After processing, Newtown police released Gingell on a $40,000 overall bail for March 14 and March 16 court appearances.

Hawleyville DUI Arrest

Police report that at about 2:19 am on March 3, they spotted motorist Adam Benzing, 28, of New Fairfield driving a vehicle at high speed on eastbound Mt Pleasant Road, after which he turned onto northbound Hawleyville Road and they followed him to observe.

Police said Benzing crossed over the roadway's shoulder line, after which they stopped him on Hawleyville Road near North Ridge Road to investigate.

Police said they charged Benzing with driving under the influence and with failure to drive in the proper lane. After processing, police released Benzing on $500 nonsurety bail for a March 21 arraignment on the charges in state Superior Court in Danbury.

South Main Collision

A two-vehicle collision occurred on South Main Street, near that street's southern intersection with Elm Drive, about 8:05 am on March 4.

Motorist Kalianna Faust, 21, of Newtown, who was driving a 2001 Volvo S-60, was attempting to exit a driveway at 81 South Main Street, as motorist Marissa Furtzaig, 20, of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., was driving a 2012 Hyundai Sonata southward on South Main Street, police said. The two autos collided.

There were no injuries. Police report they issued Faust an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

Failure To Appear

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Brian McDermott, 26, of Bethel went to the police station at about 4:30 pm on March 6 and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court, according to police.

After processing the case, police released McDermott on $500 bail for a March 21 court appearance.

Taunton Hill Road DUI

Police report that at about 8:40 pm on March 7, they received a complaint that a motorist was erratically driving a tan Honda CR-V SUV near the intersection of Old Bethel Road and Mt Pleasant Road, so they went to the area to investigate.

Police said they later located the vehicle in question on Taunton Hill Road, just north of its intersection with Wedgewood Court, so they stopped it to investigate.

Police said they charged motorist Patsy Cannone, 40, of Newtown with driving under the influence and with driving with a suspended license. Police report they held Cannone on $100 bail for arraignment on the charges on March 8 in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Looking eastward from Botsford Hill Road, a police SUV blocks access to the Botsford Hill Road railroad bridge, where a tractor-trailer truck driver carrying a load of refrigerated food got stuck when the truck's trailer became wedged beneath the low-clearance overpass at about 2:15 pm on March 2. Police said trucker Rippy Jamil Ali, 29, of Phoenix, Ariz., was driving the vehicle southward on Botsford Hill Road and then made a sharp right turn to drive below the span, but the tall vehicle got stuck under the bridge. The truck was removed about ten hours later, resulting in lengthy detours in the area. Botsford volunteer firefighters responded to the incident. Police cited Ali for violating state signs and markings indicating a low-clearance bridge. (Steve Gorham photo)
