Botsford Fire Rescue Chief Engineer John Benvenuti walks away from the vehicles involved in a collision Tuesday morning, after checking for damage and fluid spills. Police report a two-vehicle collision near 266 South Main Street, at the entrance to Plaza South shopping center, at about 7:50 am on January 23. Motorist Theodore Bura, 78, of Monroe, who was driving a 2010 Nissan Altima sedan northward on South Main Street, attempted to turn left to enter Plaza South, but in doing so Bura collided with southbound motorist Uelysee Scantling, 60, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, police said. Botsford Fire Rescue and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the accident. Both drivers were checked for injuries; neither needed transport to the hospital. Police said they issued Bura an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Daniels Hill Road

Police report that sometime between 9 pm on January 23 and 6 am on January 24, someone broke a front passenger-side window on a vehicle parked near a residence on Daniels Hill Road and then stole approximately $2,800 worth of unspecified items from within. Daniels Hill Road is a dead-end residential street that extends from Parmalee Hill Road.

To deter such theft, police urge that besides keeping their unattended vehicles locked, residents not leave any valuable items in plain sight within locked vehicles. Valuables can be placed in the vehicle's trunk to hide them or be brought indoors.

Police are investigating the burglary/larceny and ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact Officer William Crone at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203 426-5841.

DUI Charge

Police report that late on the night of January 23, they investigated a complaint of suspicious activity in the area near the intersection of Church Hill Road and Ardi Court in Sandy Hook Center.

Police said they charged motorist David Cortina, 24, of Newtown with driving under the influence and with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana. Cortina was released on $100 bail for a February 6 court appearance.

DUI Arrest

Police said they received a report about 10:23 am on January 22 informing them that there was an erratic motorist traveling in the area near the intersection of South Main Street and Orchard Hill Road.

Police located the vehicle in question and stopped it on Wasserman Way to investigate. Police said they charged motorist Robert Ahearn, 52, of Danbury, with driving under the influence, making a restricted turn, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police released Ahearn on $1,500 bail for a February 1 court appearance.

Junction Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Church Hill Road and Queen Street about 5:29 pm on January 22.

The collision involved a 2008 Subaru Legacy sedan driven by Kate Luongo, 18, of Newtown, and a 1991 US Postal Service compact delivery truck driven by David Sabia, 52, of Sandy Hook. Luongo received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way, according to police.

DUI Arrest

Police report they received a call about 5:47 pm on January 22 informing them of an erratically driven SUV that had been traveling on Interstate 84 and then got off the highway at Exit 11 and headed westward on Wasserman Way.

Police found the vehicle in question, which had stopped on Queen Street, and then investigated, charging motorist Michael Paradise, 32, of Redding, with driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane, possession of narcotics (heroin), and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following arrest processing on the charges, police released Paradise on $1,000 bail for a February 6 court appearance.

Four Warrants

On the afternoon of January 21, police said they arrested Meghann Freeman, 34, of Sandy Hook, on four warrants, charging her with four separate counts of violation of probation. Freeman posted $2,000 bail for a February 1 court arraignment.

Four Charges

Police report that they observed a vehicle traveling near the intersection of Berkshire Road and Wasserman Way at about 5:11 pm on January 20 with a marker plate on it that did not match the vehicle.

Police stopped the driver and investigated, charging motorist Brian Guidi, 36, of Beacon Falls with misuse of marker plates, driving an unregistered vehicle, failure to have automotive insurance, and possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana.

Police issued Guidi a misdemeanor summons for a February 1 court appearance.

Main Street Accident

On northbound Main Street, near its intersection with Glover Avenue at about 4:20 pm on January 19, motorist Elizabeth Cahill, 52, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2008 Volkswagen New Beetle, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Lisa Whalen, 55, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan, according to police.

There were no injuries. Whalen received a written warning for following too closely.

Breach of Peace

Police report they received a call about 9:41 pm on January 19 reporting that an assault had occurred at Cover Two Sports Cafe at 100 Church Hill Road, so they responded to investigate.

Police said that after arriving, they learned that patron Andrew Gordon, 25, of Sandy Hook, had been told to leave the premises, but that he refused. Gordon had been bothering patrons, and swearing, and had become very loud. Police said they found no evidence of an assault having occurred.

Police charged Gordon with breach of peace, releasing him on a written promise to appear in court on February 6.

Intersection Crash

About 8:40 am on January 18, motorist Anna Mastriano, 44, of Milford, who was driving a 2011 Honda Civic northward on Hattertown Road, stopped at a stop sign at its intersection Castle Meadow Road, police said.

Northbound motorist David Kayne, 56, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2005 Honda Accord sedan, then struck the rear end of the Civic, police said. There were no injuries.

Kayne received an infraction for following too closely.

Jeep Vs Honda

Motorist Laticia Hernderson, 37, of New Milford was driving a 2003 Honda Accord eastward on Church Hill Road, near its intersection with Commerce Road, at about 6:11 pm on January 18, when she stopped for traffic conditions, after which eastbound motorist Lindsey Carley, 40, of Newtown, who was driving a 2016 Jeep Wrangler SUV, stopped behind the Honda, police said.

The Jeep then rolled forward, striking the Honda, according to police. There were no injuries. Carley was verbally warned for following too closely, police said.

Four Violations

Police report they conducted a traffic stop on Mt Pleasant Road, near Susan Lane, late on the night of January 18, to investigate.

Police charged motorist Justin May, 26, of Danbury and Bridgeport with failure to carry a driver's license, driving with a suspended license, failure to have functioning tail lamps, and with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana.

May has a February 1 court date, police said.

Slippery Conditions

Police report that motorist Daniel Henion, 42, of Monroe, who was driving a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV amid slippery road conditions at about 8:30 pm on January 16, was involved in multiple impacts with stationary objects along the northern section of Pecks Lane. There were no injuries.

After investigating, police said they issued Henion a misdemeanor summons on charges of making a restricted turn, failure to maintain the proper lane, traveling too fast for conditions, and driving with a suspended license. Henion is scheduled to appear in court on January 30.

Buick Vs Audi

At about 10:08 am on January 11, motorist Jon Salvitti, 40, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2009 Buick Lucerne sedan eastward on Wasserman Way, as motorist Jamie Wells, 50, of Southbury, who was driving a 2009 Audi A-4 Cabriolet, was attempting to make a left turn from Interstate 84's Exit 11 off-ramp to go westward on Wasserman Way, according to police.

The two vehicles then collided. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members evaluated both drivers at the scene and released them, police said. Salvitti received an infraction for failure to obey a traffic control signal.

Snowy/Icy

Motorist Carlos Quiroga, 36, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2011 Honda CR-V SUV eastward on Valley View Road about 4:29 am on January 2, was negotiating a curve in the road, but then skidded on the snowy/icy roadway and traveled off the street, striking a tree head-on, police said.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Quiroga for making a restricted turn.

Rollover Crash

Police report that motorist Natalie Svanda, 22, of Newtown, was driving a 2010 Ford Focus southward on Taunton Hill Road, just north of its intersection with Wedgewood Court, at about 1:06 am on December 28, when while attempting to negotiate a curve in the road, the vehicle crossed the road's center line and then traveled off the left road shoulder, struck a stone wall and then overturned.

Svanda was initially trapped inside the Ford, police said. Svanda was transported by ambulance volunteers to Danbury Hospital. The accident is under investigation.
