Volvo Mishap

Motorist Dzmitry Plaksin, 46, of Newington was driving a 2010 Volvo S-80 auto eastward on Interstate 84, about one-half mile west of Exit 9, at about 1:07 am on January 1, when he lost control of the vehicle and struck some flex-beam guardrailing on the highway's median, state police said.

There were no injuries. Plaksin received an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Honda Vs Guardrails

At about 8 am on January 1, while traveling on eastbound Interstate 84, near the Tunnel Road overpass, motorist Edwin Perez, 29, of Waterbury, who was driving a 2001 Honda Civic, drifted onto the highway's median, after which the Honda spun across the roadway and then struck some guardrailing along the right road shoulder, state police said.

There were no injuries. Perez received an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Concrete Barrier

State police said that about 10:51 am on January 1 motorist Christopher Kyprianou, 24, of Bethel was driving a 2005 Chrysler vehicle westward on Interstate 84, near the bridge that crosses above The Boulevard, when he lost control of the vehicle, went into a spin, and then struck a concrete barrier along the right road shoulder.

There were no injuries. Kyprianou was verbally warned for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Rollover Crash

At about 5:52 pm on January 1, on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 11, while negotiating a right curve in the roadway, motorist James Fidaleo, 44, of Danbury, who was driving a 2016 Jeep Wrangler SUV, lost control of the vehicle, swerved onto the left road shoulder and then struck a signpost, after which he drove up an embankment and rolled over, state police report.

There were no injuries. Fidaleo received an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Honda Hits Sign

At about 12:39 pm on December 31, motorist Alec Sibilia, 18, of Danbury, who was driving a 2007 Honda Civic on Interstate 84's Exit 11 off-ramp, was getting off that ramp, but lost control of the auto and struck a street sign on the interchange's median, state police said.

There were no injuries. Kyprinou received a warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Dodge Rollover

Motorist D. Patrick, 26, of Naugatuck was driving a 2007 Dodge Nitro westward on Interstate 84, west of Exit 10, about 10:50 am on December 30, when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a concrete barrier, after which the vehicle rolled over, state police said.

Newtown ambulance volunteers went to the accident, but Patrick refused medical attention. Patrick was warned for traveling too fast for conditions.

SUV Off Road

Police report that motorist Tennessee Marshall Weeks, 17, of Woodbury, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban SUV northward on Far View Drive about 1:04 am on December 27, and was then negotiating a curve in the road, when the SUV traveled off the roadway at the intersection of Far View Drive and Brookbridge Drive.

The vehicle then drove down an embankment and rolled over, landing on its driver's side. There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Weeks for making a restricted turn.

Sandy Hook Crash

Police report a two-vehicle collision at a temporary traffic signal that has been set up for a bridge replacement project on Walnut Tree Hill Road, where that street crosses above the Pootatuck River, at about 12:24 pm on December 27.

Police said that motorist Trevor Gaines, 19, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2001 Volvo S-60 auto eastward on Walnut Tree Hill Road behind an eastbound 1999 International 4000 truck driven by Jose Rosado, 21, no address given.

The truck then stopped at a red traffic signal, after which the Volvo drove into the truck's rear end, police said.

Ambulance staff responded to the accident to check on a possible injury to Gaines, but did not transport him.

Police said they issued Gaines an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

I-84 DUI 

State police report that at about 8:36 pm on December 27, they responded to a report of an occupied vehicle, which was parked on the road shoulder of westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 11.

On arriving, state police said the vehicle in question starting moving, so they followed it and stopped it.

State police said they charged motorist Segundo Altamirano, 40, of Danbury with driving under the influence, driving without a license, driving while under suspension, and improper parking. After processing, state police released Altmirano on $1,000 bail for a January 10 appearance in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Intersection Collision

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Wasserman Way and the Exit 11 on-ramp for Interstate 84 at about 6 pm on December 26.

The crash occurred when motorist Corey Shaw, 28, of Newtown, who was driving a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, attempted to make a left turn, but collided with a 2007 Toyota Sienna minivan driven by Jennifer Canning, 47, of Danbury, police said.

Southbury Ambulance transported Shaw to Danbury Hospital to be medically evaluated. The accident is under investigation.

Parked Vehicle

At about 7:42 pm on December 24, motorist Vincent Guisto, 31, of Brookfield was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry sedan southward near 7 Valley Field Road South, when he looked downward at his cellphone and then struck a parked unoccupied 2013 Hyundai Verna subcompact car, police report.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Guisto for making a restricted turn and for distracted driving.

Police report a two-vehicle head-on collision near 220 South Main Street about 10:11 am on January 2. Police said motorist Peter Lucas, 49, of Newtown was driving a 2012 Cadillac CTS sedan northward on South Main Street and then crossed over the road's center line into the southbound lane where he collided head-on with a southbound 2015 GMC Yukon SUV driven by Andrea Broderick, 46, of Monroe. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Lucas to Danbury Hospital, where he was admitted as a patient and listed in fair condition midday on January 3. Ambulance members treated Broderick and a GMC passenger at the scene, police said. Botsford Fire Rescue volunteer firefighters responded to the accident. The collision is under investigation.
