Hawleyville Crash

A two-vehicle accident occurred on westbound Mt Pleasant Road, near its intersection with Old Bethel Road, about 8:34 am on November 20.

Police said motorist Michaela Custer, 27, of Watertown, who was driving a 2013 Nissan Versa, slowed in preparing to turn left onto Old Bethel Road, after which the Nissan was struck from behind by a 2012 Toyota Corolla driven by Daniel Schatzle, 31, of Southbury.

There were no injuries. Schatzle received a written warning for following too closely.

South Main Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident on South Main Street at its intersection with Prospect Drive and Pecks Lane at about 1:41 pm on November 19.

The accident involved motorist Thomas Sheehan , 59, of Shelton, who was driving a 1997 Ford Econoline E-150 van, and motorist Maria McLeod, 46, of Trumbull, who was driving an unspecified vehicle. There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Sheehan for following too closely.

Dinglebrook Lane

Motorist Margaret Maasz, 50, of Pawling, N.Y., was driving a 2016 Honda Pilot SUV northward on Dinglebrook Lane, about 500 feet south of its intersection with Driftway Drive, at about 1:47 pm on November 19, when the vehicle struck a communications cable that had fallen to the roadway due to high winds, police said.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Found Keys

On November 18 at about 12:30 pm, a set of two identical automotive keys were found on Pine Tree Hill Road at its intersection with Meadowbrook Road, police said. The keys are connected by a chain and have separate remote control fobs attached to them. The automaker's brand is displayed on the keys.

The keys' owner may contact Patrol Officer Julio Tardim at the police station at 203-426-5841 to claim the keys.

Interstate Ramp

State police report that motorist Alan Wunsch, 54, of Danbury, who was driving a 2017 Jeep Cherokee SUV, stopped at a stop sign at the end of eastbound Interstate 84's Exit 9 off-ramp at about 1:08 pm on November 18, after which the Jeep was struck from behind by 2012 Nissan Armada SUV driven by Melissa Fitzgerald-Drew, 34, of Sandy Hook.

Wunsch received possible injuries in the accident. Fitzgerald-Drew received a warning for following too closely, according to state police.

Incident Leads To Arrest

Police said they received a report about 6:08 pm on November 18 concerning a stolen cellphone at Dere Street Restaurant at 33 Main Street.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of a man who possessed the missing cellphone. That probe indicated the man had driven to the restaurant while intoxicated, police said.

After they arrested him, Jeffrey Levasseur, 30, of Sandy Hook became verbally aggressive, shouting profanities at police and people nearby, police said. Levasseur was charged with driving under the influence, sixth-degree larceny, and breach of peace, police said. After arrest processing, he was released on $1,000 bail for a November 29 court appearance.

Guitar Found

Police report that a BC-brand acoustic guitar was found along Old Farm Road behind Reed Intermediate School at Fairfield Hills on November 18.

The owner may claim the guitar by contacting Patrol Officer John McCluskey at the police station, 203-426-5841.

Money Missing

Police report that at about 10:15 am on November 17, a Wachovia Bank envelope, which contained an unspecified amount of cash, was stolen from an unlocked vehicle that was parked near the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street.

Police are investigating the incident and ask anyone with knowledge of the theft to contact them at the police station, 203-426-5841.

Auto Impact

At about 6:54 pm on November 17, motorist Travis Durrwachter, 43, of Sandy Hook, was driving a 2012 Kia Forte auto eastward near 2 Clearview Drive, when the Kia struck a parked, unoccupied 2010 Subaru Legacy sedan, police report. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Durrwachter for a motor vehicle violation.

Van Vs Auto

At about 9:02 am on November 16, on westbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 10, Donald Testa, 44, of Thomaston, who was driving a 2014 Ford Econoline E-350 van, attempted to change travel lanes, but sideswiped motorist Allison Green, 30, of Plantsville, who was driving a 2012 Honda Civic, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police warned Testa for making an unsafe lane change.

Flex-Beam Crash

At about 12:45 pm on November 16, motorist Joyce Bucciarelli, 80, of Ridgefield was driving a 2005 Toyota Prius on eastbound Interstate 84's Exit 10 off-ramp amid wet road conditions, when the auto went out of control and struck some flex-beam guardrailing, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police warned Bucciarelli for traveling too fast for conditions.

Toyota Vs Honda

State police report that at about 1:48 pm on November 16, on eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 10, motorist Elizabeth Gleason, 61, of Terryville, who was driving a 2008 Toyota Sienna minivan, sideswiped a 2015 Honda Accord auto driven by George Payson II, 51, of Newtown.

There were no injuries. State police said Gleason failed to maintain the proper lane.

Church Hill Accident

On westbound Church Hill Road, near The Boulevard, at about 5:46 pm on November 16, motorist Rachael Bassett, 53, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2008 Nissan Versa, struck the rear end of a 2008 Audi A-6 auto driven by Anthony Ehrens, 51, of Newtown.

One of three passengers in the Audi reported pain, but refused ambulance transport, police said. Police issued Bassett an infraction for following too closely.

Evading Responsibility

Police report that on the night of November 16, they arrested Michael Carbonell, 36, of Brookfield on a warrant, charging him with evading responsibility and with making a restricted turn in connection with an auto accident that occurred late on the night of June 19 near 361 South Main Street.

After arrest processing, police released Carbonell on $150 bail for an arraignment on the charges on December 5 in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Counterfeit $100 Bill

On the night of November 16, police arrested Kevin Walker, 23, of Brooklyn, N.Y., on a warrant charging him with first-degree forgery and with sixth-degree larceny.

Police said Walker allegedly passed a counterfeit $100 bill during a transaction on March 19 at the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street.

Following arrest processing, police held Walker on bail for arraignment on the charges on November 17 at Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury. In court, Walker pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. He was released on $2,500 bail for a December 5 court appearance.

DUI Incident

Police said that at about 5 pm on November 15, they received a report informing them that an erratic driver was traveling in the Barnabas Road area, so they responded to check on the complaint.

Police said they found the vehicle in question and stopped it to investigate, after which they charged motorist Nora Gharaibeh, 50, of Brookfield with driving under the influence and with making an improper turn.

After processing the case, police released Gharaibeh on $500 bail for a November 29 arraignment on the charges in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Four Vehicles

Police report a four-vehicle accident in heavy traffic on Berkshire Road, just west of its intersection with Wasserman Way, about 3:43 pm on November 15. All vehicles involved in the accident were traveling eastward on Berkshire Road in the "right turn only" lane and approaching its intersection with Wasserman Way, police said.

In that incident, motorist Theresa Cuadro, 74, of Monroe, who was driving a 2008 Land Rover LR3-HSE SUV, drove forward and struck the rear end of a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Rory Perry, 41, of Brookfield.

That impact pushed the Ford forward, causing it to strike the rear end of a 2012 Volvo XC-90 SUV driven by Diane Facey, 51, of Harwinton, police said. That impact pushed the Volvo forward, causing it to strike the rear end of a 2014 GMC Savanna van driven by Cruz Baez, 30, of Hartford.

Police report that Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Perry to Danbury Hospital for treatment. Also, Facey and a passenger in the Volvo were evaluated and released at the scene by ambulance staff, police said. Sandy Hook volunteer firefighters responded to the incident.

Police report they issued Cuadro an infraction for following too closely.

Hyundai Vs Subaru

At about 8:07 am on November 14, motorist John Deramo. 51, of Monroe, who was driving a 2017 Subaru Legend sedan northward on South Main Street, near Huntingtown Road, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by northbound motorist William Pollitt, 62, of Easton, who was driving a 2001 Hyundai Elantra, police report.

There were no injuries. Police issued Pollitt an infraction for following too closely.

SUV VS SUV

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Queen Street, just south of its intersection with Church Hill Road, about 6:48 pm on November 14.

In that incident, motorist Jill Salvitti, 42, of Sandy Hook, was stopping for a traffic, when the SUV that she was driving was struck from behind by another SUV driven by Michael Paradise, 32, of Redding, police said. There were no injuries. Paradise received an infraction for following too closely.

Roadster Vs Tree

Police report that motorist Rachel Petersen, 25, of Newtown was driving a 2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster southward on Huntingtown Road, near Old Town Road, about 10:48 pm on November 13, when she lost control of the auto and crossed the road's center line, after which the car's right tires struck the northbound curb. The Mazda then traveled off the road and struck a tree.

Both Petersen, and passenger Michael Harrigan, 24, of Great Barringtown, Mass., were transported by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Danbury Hospital for medical evaluations, police said. The accident is under investigation.

Truck Rollover

Police report that at about 1:02 am on November 12, motorist Jack Zahansky, 22, of Newtown was driving a 1999 Ford F-350 pickup truck northward on Taunton Lake Road, near its intersection with Mt Pleasant Road, and then attempted to negotiate a curve in the road, but drove over the road's center line and struck some curbing along the left road shoulder.

The truck then drove up a loose stone wall, after which it flipped and landed on its right side, police report. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Zahansky to Danbury Hospital. Police issued Zahansky an infraction for failure to keep to the right on a curve.

Cigarettes Stolen

Police report that at about 10:30 am on November 11, a white woman, estimated to be between age 20 and 40, who was wearing black clothing, including a black knit cap, and eyeglasses, told a cashier at Walgreens Pharmacy at 49 South Main Street that she wanted to buy a large amount of cigarettes.

The cashier provided the cigarettes, but then became distracted, and the woman quickly left the store with the cigarettes without paying for them. The woman then entered a vehicle in Walgreens parking lot and was driven away from the store, according to police. Police described the vehicle as a red four-door sedan from the late 1990s or early 2000s.

Police ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact investigating Officer William Crone at the police station at 3 Main Street (Route 25) at 203-426-5841.

Intersection Crash

A two-vehicle collision happened at the intersection of South Main Street and Ethan Allen Road about 11:33 am on November 11.

The accident involved motorist Carl Dudeck, 78, of Newtown, who was driving a 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup truck, and motorist Kenneth Jacobson, 79, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, police report. A passenger in the Hyundai reported pain, but declined medical attention. Dudeck received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

I-84 Ramp Crash

At about 4:20 pm on November 10, motorist Christine Schenzer, 44, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse SUV, struck the rear end of 2006 Honda Civic driven by Yazmelin Rodriguez-Martinez, 19, of Waterbury, at the end of westbound Interstate 84's Exit 9 off-ramp, according to state police.

Rodriguez-Martinez was transported by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Schenzer received a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, state police said.

Highway Collision

At about 5:05 pm on November 10 on eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 10, in slowing traffic, motorist Javier Maldonado, 35, of The Bronx, N.Y., who was driving a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse, struck the rear rend of a 2013 Hyundai Veloster driven by Whitney Vieira, 31, of Holland, Mass., pushing the Hyundai into the rear end of a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV driven by Michael Suloff, 51, of Altoona, Penn. Vieira reported pain and had a possible injury, state police said.

State police charged Maldonado with misuse of a vehicle registration, failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, failure to have automotive insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle, and driving without a license.

Washington Avenue

Motorist John Hunt, 50, of Sandy Hook, was driving a Ford vehicle southward on Washington Avenue and then stopped in preparing to make a left turn onto Pearl Street at about 5:33 pm on November 10, police said.

Southbound motorist Motorist Alexia Tavar, 26, of Newtown, who was driving a 2004 Chrysler Town & Country minivan, then struck the rear end of the Ford. There were no injuries. Tavar received an infraction for following too closely.

Turnberry Lane

About 5:09 pm on November 9, a three-vehicle accident occurred in the turnaround circle at the end of Turnberry Lane.

The three vehicles were parked parallel to the curb on the street in the industrial area. Police said that motorist Fabio Rivera, 21, of Waterbury, entered a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, after which Rivera backed up and struck the front end of a parked 2016 Chevrolet Cruze, after which the Camaro drove forward and struck the rear end of a parked 2012 Buick LaCrosse.

There were no injuries. Rivera then drove away from the scene, but on learning that he had struck two vehicles, he returned, explaining that he did not realize that the two collisions had occurred. Rivera received an infraction for unsafe movement, police said.

Sedan Vs Truck

At about 9:30 pm on November 9, a blue sedan traveling on eastbound Interstate 84, which was driven by an unknown person, changed lanes on the highway and then struck a Freightliner truck, after which the sedan drove off, state police report. There were no injuries.

State police are investigating and ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact Trooper Wayne Tate at the Troop A Barracks in Southbury at 203-267-2240.

Hawleyville Collision

Motorist Alexander Lamere, 26, of Brookfield was driving a 2013 Honda Civic southward on Hawleyville Road at about 7:49 am on November 8, and then slowed in preparing to make a left turn to enter the on-ramp for eastbound Interstate 84 at Exit 9, police report.

Lamere then stopped abruptly for a noncontact vehicle, after which southbound motorist Luis Marichal, 43, of Southbury, who was driving a commercial Ford F-350 truck, hit the rear end of the Honda.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Marichal for following too closely.

Wet Conditions

During wet road conditions at about 8:42 am on November 6, motorist Victoria Korzan, 28, of Southbury, who was driving a 2005 Pontiac Vibe hatchback on eastbound Interstate 84's Exit 10 on-ramp, hydroplaned and then struck some guardrailing along the right road shoulder twice, according to state police.

There were no injuries. Korzan received a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Honda Rollover

Motorist Jafar Naqvi, 22, of Cromwell, who was driving a 2008 Honda Civic eastward on Interstate 84, between the Exit 10 off-ramp and on-ramp, at about 9:28 am on November 6, lost control of the Honda, after which it drove off the right road shoulder and rolled over, landing on the on-ramp, state police said.

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

South Main Crash

Motorist Edward Ratigan, 47, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2014 Subaru Forester SUV southward on South Main Street, near Park Lane, struck the rear end of a southbound 2016 Volkswagen Passat sedan driven by Elaine Toaso, 61, of Danbury at about 3:14 pm on November 1, police report.

Both drivers and a passenger in the Subaru were checked by ambulance staffers at the scene and then released.

Ratigan received an infraction for following too closely, according to police.
