Restricted Turn

On September 2 at about 11:48 am, Newtown Police responded to a call for assistance at the intersection of Hanover and Schoolhouse Hill Roads. Upon arrival, officers found that a commercial 2016 International truck being operated by Kenneth John Napoli of Whitehall, Penn., was attempting a left turn when the vehicle overran the lawn and curb on the northbound shoulder of Hanover, making contact with a guide wire on the westbound shoulder of Schoolhouse Hill Road.

No visible damage to the guide wire or pole was visible, but there was some damage to the lawn and curbing. No injuries were reported. The driver was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.

Failure To Pay

On September 8 at about 9:58 am, local business person Roland Bomova, 52, of Pocono Road turned himself in to Newtown Police on an active arrest warrant for failure to pay wages (CGS 31-71b).

He was subsequently released on a $43,000 surety bond pending a September 20 court date.

Clipped Front End

Newtown police were called to respond to the intersection of Hawleyville and Mt Pleasant Roads on September 8 to investigate a minor collision. Upon arrival officers determined that Carolyn Silliman of New Fairfield was operating a 2011 Honda CR-V in the right turn only lane when she reportedly turned left, clipping the front right corner of a 2012 Buick Enclave being operated in the left turn only lane by Monika Kurrie-Taylor of Bethel.

Upon investigation, Silliman was issued an infraction for failure to obey a state traffic control sign.

Sugar Street Crash

On September 8 at about 3:38 pm, police, fire, and emergency crews responded to a report of a serious crash at 144 Sugar Street. Upon investigation, police state that Cooper Roe of Sandy Hook was operating a 2007 BMW 525xi with two passengers when he reportedly exited a business location into the path of a 2002 Sterling truck owned by Newtown Arbor Services being operated westbound by Terrance Sweeney of Danbury.

According to the report, the truck was unable to avoid contact with the BMW, contacting its front left corner. The impact then caused the BMW to spin around and causing its front end to strike a stone wall off the westbound shoulder. The impact caused the commercial vehicle to continue westbound down Sugar Street for about 50 feet on two bent tires and a possible broken axle.

All three occupants of the BMW were transported to Danbury Hospital and subsequently released.

Roe was issued an infraction for two counts of violating passenger restrictions and one count of failure to grant the right of way at a private driveway.

Three-Vehicle Crash

Newtown Police were called to the scene of a three-vehicle collision September 8, just before 5 pm, near the intersection of Berkshire and Oakview Roads.

Upon arrival, officers reported that Adam James of Newtown was operating a 2014 Honda Civic EX behind Alysha Ashby of Newtown, who was operating a 2016 Dodge JNY. Both vehicles were stopped for traffic when the Honda was struck from behind by a 2012 Toyota Prius being operated by Joanne Malia of Sandy Hook.

The collision pushed the Civic into the rear of the Dodge causing damage to both vehicles. The Prius was damaged to the extent that it had to be towed.

Malia was issued an infraction for following too closely.

South Main Collision

Newtown Police, Hook & Ladder, and ambulance responders were summoned to the intersection of South Main Street and Country Club Road at about 2:56 pm, September 8, following a reported collision. Upon arrival police report that Sally Reed of Newtown was operating a 2015 Subaru Legacy, and attempting to turn from the northbound lane of South Main into Country Club Road, when she was struck by a 2010 Honda CR-V being operated by Maryann Favale of Brookfield, southbound in the right-hand lane.

Reed told officers she was waved to make the turn by an oncoming operator, and failed to see the oncoming Honda.

Police say Favale was evaluated by ambulance volunteers and declined further treatment. Reed was issued a written warning for making a restricted turn. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Chain Reaction

Newtown Police responded to the area of Berkshire Road and Wasserman Way at about 2:11 pm on September 9 after a reported multivehicle collision. Upon arrival it was determined that John Spencer Burden of Sandy Hook was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road operating a 2008 Jeep Wrangler, when he reportedly told police he glanced to his right to observe a vehicle passing his right side, but failed to see traffic stopped in front of him.

His vehicle collided with the rear of a 2004 Chevrolet Impala being operated by Joshua Alexander Deguzman of Sandy Hook, which was pushed into the rear of a 2002 Subaru Legacy being operated by Jack Keegan Whelan of Sandy Hook.

The Subaru then contacted the rear of a 2003 Chevy Malibu being operated by Matthew Kabara of Stratford. No injuries were reported and all involved vehicles remained drivable.

Burden was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Restricted Turn

On September 10 at about 5:05 pm, Newtown Police were called to Rock Ridge Road after a report of a minor traffic incident. Upon investigation, police report that Chantalle Antoinette Campbell of Rock Ridge Road was operating a 2008 Nissan Sentra southbound when the vehicle drifted to the right side of the road, up onto the curbing, and the passenger side mirror struck a utility pole shattering the passenger side window.

No injuries were reported, and the driver was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.

Improper Passing

Newtown Police responded to an accident report on September 10 at about 1:52 pm in the area of 59 Poverty Hollow Road. Upon arrival officers determined that Carlos Benton of Redding was operating a 2011 GMC Acadia S southbound behind a 2005 Nissan Frontier being operated by Andrea Tersigni, and attempted to pass her vehicle on the left while she was turning left into a driveway.

The passenger side of the GMC made contact with the driver side of the Nissan causing minor damage to both vehicles, but no reported injuries.

Police issued Benton an infraction for improper passing.

Fled The Scene

On September 10 at about 6:12 pm, State Police responded to the area of Exit 9 in Newtown after receiving a report of a traffic incident. Upon investigation it was determined that Karla Ruth Maddy of Simsbury was traveling westbound in the left lane of I-84 when another vehicle in the adjacent lane swerved to the left striking her 2017 Kia sedan, causing minor damage to the right side of the vehicle.

No enforcement occurred because the offending vehicle fled the scene.

Evading Driver Sought

Newtown Police are looking for assistance in locating a light blue 2011-2013 Hyundai with front end damaged, which reportedly struck and damaged a mailbox and stone wall on Walnut Tree Hill Road near Patriot Ridge on September 11 at about 12:30 am.

Minor Rear-Ender

Two out-of-state drivers were involved in a minor rear-end collision September 12 at about 4:30 pm. According to the State Police report, John Pickett of Rockaway, N.J., was traveling eastbound, east of Exit 9, in a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse when he slowed for stopped traffic, and was hit from behind by a 2004 Chevy Silverado being operated by William Shawn Spicher of Rossiter, Penn.

Spicher was verbally warned for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart.

Under Suspension

On September 12 at about 2:20 pm, State Police responded to the area of the Exit 10 off ramp of eastbound I-84 to investigate a crash report. Upon arrival troopers determined that Christopher Padilla-Severino of Danbury was operating a 2000 Honda Accord in the left lane when he stopped suddenly for slowing traffic. The Honda was struck from behind and on the side by a BMW X5 being operated by Xiang Zhen Chen of Wallingford.

Chen was issued an infraction for following too close. Padilla-Severino was issued a summons for operating under suspension, and was given a court appearance date on September 27 in Danbury. The Honda was damaged to the extent that it had to be towed, but no injuries were immediately reported.

DUI Arrest

On September 13, at about 12:40 pm, Newtown officers were called to investigate a report of a vehicle driving over and damaging the lawn at 67 Church Hill Road. The offending vehicle had left the scene and was located later near the intersection of Currituck and Parmalee Hill Roads. Upon investigating, officers administered a field sobriety test, and subsequently arrested Deyaniris Rodriguez of Norwalk for operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The accused was processed and released on a $500 bond and issued a September 27 court date.
