Police were dispatched about 4 am on Thursday, June 28, to a Cedar Hill Road residence to investigate a reported auto theft, according to police spokesman Lieutenant Aaron Bahamonde.

A patrol officer in the area spotted the stolen vehicle and then made a very short pursuit before the stolen vehicle became involved in a collision, after which the alleged auto thief fled the scene, the lieutenant said.

Newtown police conducted an extensive search there, but it was not until several hours later that a resident in that area called police to report a suspicious individual. Police then found the auto theft suspect who was identified as Angel Garcia, age 18, of Danbury.

Another vehicle was also stolen from a residence on Greenbriar Lane. It was believed to have been stolen by accomplices of Mr Garcia, according to the lieutenant.

Mr Garcia was being held on bail the Newtown Police Department for a June 29 court arraignment. The investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected.

Police said additional information on the June 28 incidents, including the charges lodged against Mr Garcia, will be issued on June 29.
