Contact Newtown Continuing Education at 203-426-1787 for further information on dates, times, and location, visit newtowncontinuinged.orgNew York Botanical Garden, Chihuly Installation - A bus trip to the New York Botanical Garden, June 3, 9 am to 5 pm, $89. Limited seats are available. It has been more than ten years since the artwork of world-renowned sculptor Dale Chihuly has been featured in a major exhibit in New York, and the dramatic vistas of The New York Botanical Garden provide an ideal setting for the work. The one-of-a-kind installations will highlight the connection between the artist's sculptures and the natural world and complement the architecture of the conservatory, itself a work of art. New, hand-blown glass sculptures, created especially for the New York Botanical Garden will be on exhibit through the Garden. The Garden in the Bronx consists of 28 specialty gardens, including a conservatory, a children's adventure garden, and a 40-acre old-growth forest. After spending the morning in the gardens tripgoers will have time to stroll down Arthur Avenue, the "little Italy of the Bronx" for lunch on their own (if they do not eat in the gardens) and a chance to shop for Italian specialties. Tripgoers can bring a cooler on the bus, but no alcoholic beverages are allowed. No discounts apply.Hatha Yoga - A ten-class course starting March 20, 6:30 to 7:30 pm, $99. This session offers easy to learn yoga postures set to a gentle flow. A good personal home practice can be cultivated. Students should bring their yoga mat and towel. Yoga blocks are optional.Italian, Beginners Part 1 - A five class course starting March 20, 6 to 7 pm, $139. Learn one of the world's most beautiful languages with Lucia Dibenedetto, a native of Italy and a teacher with many years of experience teaching Italian to adults and children. This course is for those with little or no previous knowledge of Italian. Students will begin to develop an Italian vocabulary, learn pronunciation, and simple phrases and sentences. Students will be required to pay the instructor $25 at the first class for the text book. This is non-refundable. No discounts apply.Basic Watercolor Techniques - A six class course starting March 21, 6 pm to 9 pm, $129. Students will explore the art of watercolor painting. This course will include the basic techniques for using watercolor as an expressive and versatile way to paint. Basic drawing/illustration techniques for artists will also be covered. The class will include more advanced techniques for students who already know some of the basics. Students will be required to purchase supplies and a list will be provided.Taking Control, Financial Strategies For Women - A one time class, March 21, 6:30 to 8:30 pm, $29. The Taking Control Workshop focuses on personal finances from a woman's perspective. The educational presentation is designed to help strengthen an individual's financial future and covers these important action items: getting a financial house in order, preparing for the unexpected, putting money to work by investing, building a healthy nest egg for retirement, facing financial hardship, and addressing estate and legacy issues. The course will cover specific information for women who face divorce or widowhood, as well as many other concerns that could directly affect finances, such as maintaining good credit and maximizing Social Security benefits. Everyone who attends will receive a 20-page workbook filled with a wealth of information. An optional complimentary consultation is offered to all workshop participants after the class.Integral Qigong And Tai Chi - An eight-class course starting March 21, 6:30 to 7:30 pm, $99. Qigong, and later tai chi, were developed and refined over thousands of years with the exact purpose of mindful evolution of body, mind, and spirit. Experience and learn easy to follow qigong and tai chi movements and techniques to develop a personal practice for health and well being. Prepare to be relaxed and rejuvenated. Students should wear comfortable clothing.The Importance Of Wills And Life Planning Documents - A one time class, March 22, 6:30 to 8:30 pm, $29. The class is for those who have heard the terms living will, durable power of attorney (POA), health care directive & proxy, revocable and irrevocable trusts, DNR, and more but may not know what they mean, how they are created, and how important they are in today's society.Sewing Machine Basics - A two-class course starting March 23, 6 to 8 pm, $59. Learn how to use a sewing machine correctly, what each part does, how to troubleshoot common problems, plus tips for easier threading and smoother stitches. Students will become comfortable with their sewing machine and discover how to use its best features and attachments. Students should bring their sewing machine with manual, accessories, needles, and bobbins to each class. The instructor will provide general sewing supplies (thread, pins, scrap fabric) for practice. Limited to eight students.First Aid - A one time class, March 23, 5:30 to 8:30 pm, $89. This course teaches what to do during emergencies. Positively Shocking LLC can teach the skills and provide a two-year American Red Cross Certification in First Aid. This course is designed so that lay persons will react with confidence in an emergency situation.The Basics Of Drawing - A six-class course, starting March 23, 6 to 9 pm, $129. Students will learn basic drawing skills while being guided through the fundamental steps and techniques needed to understand how to create a drawing. Lessons will include exploring the use of shapes, lines, shading, creating texture, and perspective. No prior drawing experience is necessary. Students who have experience and wish to review or improve skills are welcome.Chess For Parents - A two-class course, starting March 23, 6:30 to 8 pm, $34. This course is for parents who wish to learn how to play Chess, the game of thinking, and join in the fun enjoyed by kids everywhere. Students will be taught by Newtown's resident, lifelong chess expert, and chess teacher Glenn Budzinski. All of the basics will be covered from piece movement to ending the game through checkmate.Introduction To Numerology - A one-time class, March 23, 6 to 7:15 pm, $49. Numerology is an ancient metaphysical science that reveals the blueprint of every human being's life and is an accurate and powerful self-help tool. Students will learn to calculate seven personality numbers, four pinnacles and challenges, and karmic lessons and debts for themselves, family and friends.
