A cooperative effort between Newtown Commission on Aging, NYA Sports & Fitness Center, and Friends of Newtown Seniors means local senior citizens have an opportunity to learn a self-defense program, free of charge.

"Krav Maga For Seniors: so that one may walk in peace" will be offered Wednesdays and Fridays, March 8-24, from 1 to 2 pm, at NYA Sports & Fitness Center, 4 Primrose Street.

Originated by Imi Litchenfeld in Israel, Krav Maga has been taught to armed forces and police officers around the world. Now it is being offered for civilian self-defense.

Britt Soden, who has two decades of experience in tae kwon do, karate, Muay Thai, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, will be the instructor. When Mr Soden found Krav Maga in 2005, it changed his approach to martial arts.

Mr Soden has earned his black belt, and is reportedly the only Krav Maga practitioner in Connecticut to hold that rank. Mr Soden's complete understanding of martial arts allows his classes to feel like private lessons, regardless of student levels.

No previous martial arts training is needed to participate in "Krav Maga For Seniors." A commitment to attend all six sessions is requested, however.

For additional information or to register, call 203-430-0633 or send e-mail to info@friendsofnewtownseniors.org.

NYA members can also register for this program at the NYA Fitness Desk.
