Nighthawk Teams Roll In Season Openers

Update: Highlights from the girls' soccer team's win over Watertown on September 9 have been added.

A pair of first-year Newtown High School head coaches got wins in their first games as part of an opening night of domination for the Nighthawks, September 8.

The football team, led by Coach Bobby Pattison, blanked host Pomperaug of Southbury 27-0, and Nick Booth and the boys' booters blanked visiting Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport 5-0 at Blue & Gold Stadium.

In keeping with the shutout theme, the girls' soccer team was an 8-0 winner on the road over Kolbe, and the host girls' volleyball team blanked Darien 3-0 (24-15, 25-23, 25-22). In other action, the girls' swim squad defeated host Bunnell of Stratford 85-75.

From The Gridiron

Quarterback Ryan Kost connected with Riley Ward twice, and Dan Mason rushed for a pair of TDs to help the Hawk gridders to victory. Kost completed 12 of 23 pass attempts for 162 yards in the win over Pomperaug. Ward had six catches for 90 yards.

Mason carried five times for 55 yards, Jack Miller had 15 carries for 48 yards, and Matt Dubois rushed nine times for 39 yards.

Dubois had an interception. Joe Zeller and Ryan Williams combined on two and a half sacks for minus 13 yards. Alex Street and Williams were solid on the defensive line, and Shea Talbot registered ten tackles.

On The Pitch

Thomas Skrelja opened the scoring, and Brendan O'Hara set up a Jack Oltran on consecutive goals for a 3-0 lead to send the boys' soccer team on its way to victory.

The girls' booters, following the win over Kolbe, visited Watertown on September 9, and pulled out a 5-3 win. Emma Curtis netted a hat-trick and Grace Corcoran notched two goals.

The girls continue their string of road contests to begin the season with a September 11 visit to Notre Dame-Fairfield, beginning at 4 pm.

Spikers Battle Past Darien

The volleyball team had hard-fought victories in games two and three to defeat Darien. Zoe Beals had eight kills and four digs; Kim Buttery logged four aces, five digs, and 25 assists; and Erin Mitchell added six kills and a pair of blocks.

Swimmers Make A splash

First-place finishers from the swim team's victory:

200 yard medley relay: Mary Hufziger, Olivia Renkert, Emmi DeSousa, and Maddie Carter 2:10.11.

200 freestyle: Martha Seaver 2:16.90.

200 individual medley: Carter 2:26.53.

50 free: Caroline Mahoney 27.65.

100 butterfly: Carter 1:06.28.

100 free: Hufziger 55.27.

500 free: Grace Bertsche 6:26.41.
