Newtown High School's boys' lacrosse team shook off a 15-4 loss to host Fairfield Prep on April 2 with a hard-fought 12-10 win at South-West Conference rival Brookfield on April 5.

In the season-opening setback, Jared Pearson notched two goals and an assist, Tucker Garrity had a goal and two assists, and Matt Meyers also scored. In goal, Dave Anderson had eight saves and Tommy Elliot made five stops for the Nighthawks.

"Very young team got a lot of experience today," first-year Newtown High Coach Scott Bulkley said of his squad taking on perennial Southern Connecticut Conference and state powerhouse Prep.

The Nighthawks played hard in the win over Brookfield, said Bulkley, noting that faceoff specialist Mark Urso played a key role by winning 21 of 25 faceoffs.

Layton Harrell and Meyers each recorded hat-tricks, and Pearson had a hat-trick worth of assists, setting up a trio of tallies, and added a goal. Elliot Gregory and Scotty Bauer both had a goal and an assist, Garrity scored a goal and added two assists, Peyton Manning scored, and Stephen Faxlanger assisted a goal. Elliot made six saves between the pipes.
