The Newtown High School football team didn’t need to do anything tricky to treat themselves to an easy 54-13 win under the lights at Weston High on Halloween. Newtown was scary-good from the start, piling up 34 first-quarter points en route to a 48-0 halftime lead. The Nighthawks improved to 8-0 and Weston fell to 3-5.

The first touchdown came on defense when Ben Mason recovered a fumble and ran the ball back 11 yards for a score. Jaret DeVellis found the end zone on a 38-yard run and Newtown had a 14-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.

After a Nick Rubino three-yard TD rush, quarterback Jacob Burden connected with Julian Dunn on the first of two consecutive TDs through the air. The first came from 32 yards out and the second was a 22-yarder, making the score 34-0. Andrew Cragin came away with an interception in the waning seconds of the first quarter.

The Nighthawks added to their lead with two more scores in the second – Ethan Carpenter’s 19-yard TD reception and a Hunter Cobb 40-yard dash gave the Nighthawks complete control heading into the intermission.

Newtown will look to continue its winning ways when the team visits Stratford for a 7 pm kickoff on Friday, November 7.

Hunter Cobb carries the ball during Newtown’s 45-7 win over Notre Dame-Fairfield, on September 18. Cobb rushed for a touchdown in the triumph.
