The Newtown Nighthawks Marching Band & Guard scored wins in its division in the first two competitions of its season. The 2016 show titled "Something Wicked This Way Comes- Dark's Pandemonium Carnival" is based on the classic dark and sinister fantasy novel by Ray Bradbury.

On Saturday, September 10, the Band & Guard performed its show at Bethel High School. The Nighthawks took top honors in the categories of Best Music and Best Overall Effect.

The following Saturday, September 17, at Norwalk's Brien McMahon High School, the Band & Guard again won its division and again won special recognition for Best Music and Best Overall Effect.

Next up for the Band & Guard is competition at New Milford High School on Saturday, September 24. The Nighthawks are scheduled to perform at 7:50 pm

The 100 Family Tag Sale

Barely an hour into the NHS Band & Guard 100-Family Tag Sale, held on Saturday, September 17, in the NHS cafeteria, a large number of people scanned items for bargains.

Band Parent Board President Michele Buzzi said roughly 40 parent volunteers were working at the tag sale, as the students were practicing that morning. The night before, roughly 100 parents and students worked to set up the tag sale, which had items on display throughout the cafeteria and the adjoining outdoor patio.

The 100-Family Tag Sale is an annual fundraiser to benefit the NHS Band & Guard. This is the eighth year the tag sale has been held.

"It's really moving," said Ms Buzzi, before 10 am on Saturday.
