Newtowner Receives Nightingale Award

For Nursing Excellence

Newtown resident Maureen Shimko, RN, of St Vincent’s Behavioral Health Services, Westport Campus, is a recipient of the 2010 Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing. The award celebrates outstanding nurses and the goals of the program are to encourage retention, inspire future nurses, focus public attention and recognize the breadth and scope of nursing practice at the local level.

She has served as a registered nurse with St Vincent’s Behavioral Health Services for three years and has more than 20 years experience as a geriatric nurse. According to her colleagues, “Maureen is a kind and calm nursing role model and does not hesitate to step in and help her peers.”

She is considered to be meticulous and reliable in her delivery of patient care and is often asked to serve as a preceptor for teaching medication administration.

“Maureen is a wonderful nurse and an asset to the nursing team here at St Vincent’s,” said Peggy Hardy, RN, assistant vice president of nursing at St Vincent’s Behavioral Health Services. “She is professional, cheerful, extremely competent, and a wonderful role model to her peers.”
