‘Mediterranean Magic’ Being Planned

“No one has to travel far,” promise organizers of Mediterranean Magic, a special event being planned for Saturday, November 12, at Congregation Adath Israel.

An evening of Mediterranean-themed food and entertainment will also include a silent auction with more than 80 items being offered.

A belly dance performance featuring Adina and her entourage, Rakshanda Rya, will be featured. Dinner will be home-style savory Middle Eastern recipes.

The silent auction will include everything from a backstage tour of the Boston Symphony, kayaking lessons, theater tickets, and restaurant certificates to antiques including a Tiffany desk blotter, jewelry, gift baskets, and a stay at an inn in Great Barrington, Mass. In addition, Yossi Kohrman-Glaser will offer one hour of classical guitar playing, either as background music for a party or a recital, and a performance by Kory Brodsky and his five-piece bluegrass band will be available through the auction.

Also being offered in the auction are gift certificates from Dental Associates, Dodgingtown Service Station, Newtown Florist, Newtown Color Center, Town Players of Newtown, Bethel Cinema, Greater Bridgeport Symphony, Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University, and Westport Country Playhouse.

One of the evening’s featured items will be Selma Kenter’s 69-by-90-inch quilt, “Inspirations from Myrto.” Ms Kenter lives part-time in Newtown and part-time in Istanbul, where she has a quilting shop. Her work is often seen at Festival of Trees, the annual holiday fundraiser put on by Ann’s Place/The Home of I Can. Her lectures and workshops have taken her to Mongolia, Japan, Bosnia, France, and the United Kingdom, where her  work is exhibited.

Tickets are available at two levels. Those who wish to enjoy the full evening, including dinner at 6, can buy tickets for $35 per person or $65 for a couple; or for those who wish to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and dessert and the entertainment beginning at 7:15, tickets are $25 each, $45 per couple. All tickets include the silent auction.

Reservations are due by November 7.

Tickets are available at Dunkin’ Donuts, 6 Queen Street in Newtown; online at www.adath.ticketleap.com/mediterranean-magic; or by sending a check with a note indicating which ticket option and how many, to Adath Israel, PO Box 623 Newtown CT 06470.
