Love, Knishes & Antique Dishes

SOUTHBURY — Do you have dreams of finding a valuable treasure amongst all the stuff you’ve collected or inherited over the years? Perhaps you will when antique dealer Wayne Mattox of Woodbury hosts an Antiques Road Show-type event at the Wednesday, March 2 Love & Knishes Lunch at the Jewish Federation, 444 Main Street North.

Jordan Caterers of Cheshire will provide lunch at noon, and after that Mr Mattox will regale guests with a short and entertaining talk followed by free verbal appraisals of items. Jewelry with precious stones should not be brought in, and for larger items, such as furniture, a couple of good photos will suffice.

Mr Mattox is a noted expert in areas of American furniture, folk art, paintings, glass, pottery, ephemera and collectibles, and he has broad experience in American and European antiques. Founding president of Woodbury Antiques Dealers Association and past president of Woodbury Lions Club, Mr Mattox has twice been honored as Lion of the Year for his dedication to local and national charitable causes. He has served as celebrity auctioneer for many large-scale fundraisers, including St Mary’s Hospital and Flanders Nature Center.

Mr Mattox began writing a popular weekly magazine and newspaper column, “Antique Talk,” in 1995 and has published over 500 articles. He has been interviewed on cable channels in Connecticut and was featured on the award winning Boston based television program, Chronicle. And for over 20 years he has maintained a busy antique appraisal business serving trust attorneys, insurance agencies and home owners in need of appraisal services.

More Love & Knishes Dishes

Four musical programs round out the rest of the month at Love & Knishes.

On March 9, singer and guitarist Willie Nininger of Heritage Village will perform favorite hits from the 50’s and ‘60s. On March 16, pianist Ethel Kaufman will be joined by trumpeter Bucky Milam and drummer Jeremy Alston in a program of beloved songs from The Great American Songbook.

The following week singer and guitarist Pierce Campbell returns for the annual Irish-Jewish Mishmash. And on March 30, musician Bruce Hazard, who plays ten different instruments, will play an eclectic mix of everything from classical to bluegrass, country and old standards.

Reservations are requested by noon on the Monday before each program. All programs are open to the public, and there is a suggested lunch donation of $7.50 for adults age 60 and better and $9.50 for those under 60.

Call Debby Horowitz, Brownstein Jewish Family Service Director, at 203-267-3177 extension 105, for reservations and additional information.
