Newtown High School’s spring musical, Les Miserables, School Edition, will be presented this weekend.
The production will be performed Thursday through Saturday, March 22, 23, and 24, at 7 pm, and 2 pm performances will take place Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25. Tickets for the production can be purchased ahead of time online at nhsc.booktix.com. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.
Production crew members are Director Jane Matson, Producer Janice Gabriel, Technical Director Brian Tenney, Musical Director Anna De Masi, and Rehearsal Pit Conductor Kurt Eckhardt.
During a dress rehearsal on March 19, Ms Matson said she wants people to know “how impressive this group of students is.” Despite canceled rehearsals due to snow days, Ms Matson said the students have worked hard. Ms Matson said the cast, pit orchestra, and crew are “all so impressive, every single one of them.” She added that her colleagues on the production have also worked late, long hours to make sure the show is ready for the performance dates.
With the newly renovated auditorium looking “pretty,” Ms Matson said she chose Les Miserables to be the first production in the space because she wanted something grand and epic to match the surroundings.
Les Miserables, Ms Matson added, is a tragic, sad, hopeful, and beautiful story.
The musical tells the story of Jean Valjean with the backdrop of 19th Century France. When Jean Valjean is released from prison, his path leads him through navigating moral dilemmas of helping others while being tracked by a police inspector named Javert.
