Friends of Newtown Seniors (FONS) and Newtown Commission on Aging continue to collaborate to bring high-quality events and activities to seniors in Newtown.

Britt Soden of Connecticut Krav Maga will present six classes of "Krav Maga for Seniors," beginning Wednesday, June 7, at NYA Sports & Fitness Center. Krav Maga is a form of self defense developed in Israel and is now used in the training of armed forces and police around the world.

NYA has partnered with FONS to sponsor a series of activities as part of a joint longevity initiative. The trained and certified staff at NYA as well as outside experts such as Mr Soden offer educational seminars and participatory events that enrich the lives of all those involved. Mr Soden brings decades of experience as a trainer in many forms of self-defense but has particular expertise in Krav Maga.

The simple creed "so that we may walk in peace" summarizes the approach. The main goal is to provide first heightened awareness and strategies for avoiding conflict and then, only as a last resort, techniques to aggressively attack a larger very determined foe who is intent on causing physical harm.

Mr Soden creates a very demanding yet enjoyable atmosphere in his classes. Seniors who have previously taken this program speak highly not only of the Krav Maga as valuable set of skills, but also of Mr Soden's approach and presentation of the information.

This program is free to participants due to a grant awarded to the Commission on Aging. Registration is required, since space is limited.

Classes will take place at 1 pm on Wednesdays and Fridays, June 7 to 23. To register or for additional information send e-mail to info@friendsofnewtownseniors.org, leave a message at 203-430-0633, or send a note to Friends of Newtown Seniors, PO Box 413, Newtown CT 06470.

It is the goal of Friends of Newtown Seniors to continue to work with the Commission on Aging and NYA to bring these experiences as well as thoughtful and informative classes to seniors. These programs encourage active physical and mental involvement, socialization, and positive attitudes among all those who take part.
