To the Editor:

As we go to the polls this year, we need to remember that there is much more than the presidential candidates to consider. Ninety-nine percent of the laws we live our daily lives by are made in Hartford, not Washington. The person we select for our state senator is, then, very important.

Our incumbent State Senator Tony Hwang, a Republican, has done a spectacular job for us in the 28th District and for all Connecticut citizens. Tony possesses two traits that are crucial to being an effective legislator. First he has a vision for a future Connecticut with a prosperous and dynamic economy. Second, he is an incredible stand-up guy with a great work ethic who makes things happen.

During the past six years, Connecticut's economy has been ruined by our inept governor. We are confronted quarterly with a gigantic deficit that, apparently, he never saw coming. He blames these deficits on the economy rather than his shaky budgetary maneuverings and his appetite for constant spending which has resulted in higher and higher taxes. State Senator Tony Hwang has been a strong voice against this ineptitude for a long time.

I was state senator in the 26th District from 1873 to 1979 when Connecticut was ranked as the wealthiest and most prosperous state in the union. We had no state income tax. Every town and city had substantial contributions for education from the state. We had an across the board pro-business attitude. It was the state that people flocked to. Not anymore. Now people and businesses are leaving in droves. Our real estate is stagnant. We cannot attract businesses and the state contributes virtually nothing to education. The state's answer is to raise taxes (again).

Voting for our incumbent State Senator Tony Hwang guarantees a vote for all positive things that will return our state to prosperity. If you share my frustrations about the mess Connecticut is in, please remember to vote for Tony Hwang, the candidate who pledges himself for a brighter future for us all.

Sincerely,

George C. Guidera
