The Matthew Curtiss House, 44 Main Street, home of Newtown Historical Society, was constructed about 1750, and purchased by Matthew Curtiss, Jr, in 1781.

Maintained by the historical society as a house museum, the society's collections represent the house throughout its life. All the items in the house reflect either a direct Newtown connection or are examples of things that might well have been used in the town, whether for work, play, or to celebrate an occasion.

Newtown Historical Society will offer a chance to view these treasures on Sunday, June 11, when it hosts an open house from noon until 4 pm. Costumed docents will be available to lead tours. Visitors will also be free to walk through the house on their own.

The open house will be held in conjunction with Town Historian Dan Cruson's annual walking tour of the town, this year in Sandy Hook. The walk will meet on the northern corner of Washington Avenue and Church Hill Road, at 1 pm. Mr Cruson plans to spend about 45 minutes walking and talking.

Refreshments will be served at the Curtiss House before and after the walk.

Newtown Historical Society is an entirely volunteer organization, which limits the society to one open house per month during the spring and fall. For additional information call 203-426-5937 or visit newtownhistory.org.
