ALLAN HOUSER, INC, INDIAN MARKET OPEN HOUSE AUG. 23 & 24

ak/gs set 7/30 #747173

SANTA FE, N.M. — Allan Houser, Inc, has announced that it will have its annual open house during Indian Market weekend at the Allan Houser sculpture gardens. The gardens will be open Saturday, and Sunday, August 23 and 24, from 11 am to 4 pm.

The open house includes full tours of the 12-acre sculpture gardens, the archives, the gallery and tours of the Allan Houser Foundry. In addition, a special presentation will be given on Sunday at noon by curator David Rettig on “The Legacy of One Apache Family: Allan Houser, Phillip Haozous and Bob Haozous.”

The downtown gallery is featuring Houser’s 1991 alabaster carving “Like the Eagle,” which has been placed on display by the Houser estate for the first time.

Recognition of Houser as a sculptor began in 1948 with the completion of his first stone carving titled “Comrade in Mourning,” commissioned for the Haskell School in Lawrence, Kan. In succeeding decades he refined his approach to stone sculpture and complete hundreds of works done in marble, alabaster and limestone. As a sculpture instructor in the 1960s and 1970s he shared his expertise and ideas with countless students and helped create what many art historians consider a renaissance in stone carving. In 1992, a PBS film documentary referred to him as “the Dean of Stone.”

The Allan House gallery is one-half block north of the Santa Fe plaza on Lincoln Street and will be open Friday, August 22, 10 am to 7 pm and August 23, 10 am to 5 pm.
