Head O' Meadow Awards Students At End Of Year Assembly

Head O' Meadow Elementary School (HOM) staff celebrated their students' many accomplishments with their annual End of the Year Awards Assembly on June 9, at 9:30 am.

Families of award recipients were invited to attend the ceremony, along with the entire school community.

Math/science specialist Chrissie Pierce started off the event by presenting the math awards. Members of the Math Super Star Program stood for applause and 15 students of the Math Olympians Team were given awards for their hard work.

Physical education teacher Steve Dreger read off the names of the students who received the school's physical education awards, who then stood to be recognized by the crowd.

Parent volunteer Kristen Mattera organizes and facilitates the Geography Bee Program, and presented the geography awards at the assembly. This was the seventh year HOM participated in the Geography Bee program, and 42 dedicated students from third and fourth grade classes received awards.

HOM Principal Barbara Gasparine presented the Special Citizenship Award and told the audience, "We appreciate all the students who shared their kindness and care."

Following this honor, Ms Gasparine spoke about a specific student, Lucia St Lorenzo, and presented her with an award of Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill.

Along with many community service works, Lucia helped her school by creating the "No Child Hungry" program, where a fund was made in her name to go on to help students. She received a certificate for her outstanding work, as the school's staff and audience members cheered.

Ms Gasparine made her closing remarks at the ceremony and thanked all the HOM teachers and staff members for their time and efforts.

"I'm the luckiest principal in the world, working with you all," Ms Gasparine said.

Music teacher Grace Rimkunas led the school in singing a farewell song to the fourth grade students who will be moving on to Reed Intermediate School next school year.

The singing continued as everyone sang the upbeat Head O' Meadow school song to conclude the awards assembly.
