Hanover/Main Crash

Hanover/Main Crash

Police, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members, and Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters responded to a two-vehicle accident about 12:37 pm on June 19 at the intersection of Main Street and Hanover Road.

Police said that motorist Charles Yarish, 63, of 153 Hanover Road, who was driving a 2010 Ford Escape SUV, traveled southward on Hanover Road and then stopped at a stop sign at its intersection with Main Street. At that time, motorist Phyllis Kelley, 78, of 161 Jennifer Lane was driving a 2000 Toyota Camry sedan northward on Main Street, police said.

The Ford then attempted to make a left turn onto southbound Main Street, but collided with the Toyota, police said. Yarish, Phyllis Kelley, and Toyota passenger Warren Kelley, 85, of 161 Jennifer Lane were transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

Police said they issued Yarish an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

Three MV Charges

Police said they received a report about 2:50 pm on June 19 that a motorist was driving erratically northward on South Main Street, near Ethan Allen Road, so they investigated.

Police said they located the motorist in question, Jose Gabriel Restrepo-Aguirre, 23, of Bridgeport, on South Main Street, near Elizabeth Street, where they stopped him to investigate.

Police said they charged him with driving with a suspended vehicle registration, driving with a suspended license, and misuse of marker plates.

Restrepo-Aguirre was released on $100 bail for a July 3 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Hattertown Road

Police report that at about 9:26 am on June 19, they saw motorist Jose Juan Cordero-Ocotl, 29, of Bridgeport driving a 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup truck faster than the posted speed limit southward on Hattertown Road near its intersection with Wiley Lane.

Police stopped Cordero-Ocotl to investigate, after which they charged him with driving with a suspended vehicle registration, driving without a license, and traveling too fast.

Cordero-Ocotl was released on $250 bail for a July 10 court appearance, according to police.

DUI Incident

Police said that at about 12:40 am on June 16, they spotted a motorist driving faster than the posted 30-mph speed limit near 15 Main Street, so they stopped that driver to investigate.

Police said they charged the Trumbull driver, who is age 17, with driving under the influence by a minor, driving without a license, and traveling too fast. Police released the driver on $100 bail for a June 25 court appearance. Because the driver is under age 18, the youth’s identity is shielded from disclosure by state law.

Police said there was a passenger in the vehicle, Christopher Cortina, 18, of Trumbull. Police said they issued Cortina an infraction with the charges of possession of alcohol by a minor and possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana.

Both charges carry fines which are payable by mail, or the defendant may appeal the charges in court.

Church Hill Accident

Police said motorist Christopher Guertin, 28, of Waterbury was driving a 2011 Toyota Camry sedan eastward on Church Hill Road about 4 pm on June 21.

At that time, motorist John Heerdt, 49, of Prospect was driving a 2011 Infiniti GX-25 sedan westward on Church Hill Road, according to police.

The Infiniti then stopped in preparing to make a left turn into the Mobil gas station at 62 Church Hill Road, police said. But in attempting that turn, the Infiniti and the Toyota collided, police said.

There were no injuries. Heerdt received a written warning for making a restricted turn, police said.

Flagpole Crash

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the flagpole intersection at Main Street, West Street, and Church Hill Road about 5 pm on June 8.

In that incident, motorist Michael Zambardino, Jr, 27, of Danbury, who was driving a 2010 Nissan sedan, struck the rear end of a 2005 Hyundai sedan driven by Teresa Saboe, 57, of 57 Farrell Road, police said.

There were no injuries. Zambardino received a written warning for failure to grant the right of way, according to police.

Pine Tree Hill Road

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Pine Tree Hill Road at its intersection with Bears Hill Road at about 9:36 pm on June 15, police report.

Police said that an unoccupied 2004 Infiniti I-35 sedan was parked with its driver’s door open on northbound Pine Tree Hill Road at its intersection with Bears Hill Road.

At that time, motorist Donald Marvin, 65, of Monroe was driving a 2000 Acura sedan southward on Pine Tree Hill Road, police said.

As the Acura passed by the parked Infiniti, the vehicles made contact, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Marvin a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions. Police said they issued the man who had been driving the Infiniti, Jack DaMota, 19, of Monroe, a written warning for improper parking.

 

Hawleyville Crash

Police report a collision at the intersection of Farrell Road and Patricia Lane in Hawleyville about 5 pm on June 15.

Police said that motorist Michael Scharfenberg, 17, of 7 Patricia Lane, who was driving a 2005 Honda Accord sedan, was driving eastward on Patricia Lane and then stopped at a stop sign at its intersection with Farrell Road.

At that time, motorist J. Abramson, 38, of New Milford was driving a 2006 Toyota Sienna minivan southward on Farrell Road, police said.

The Honda then attempted to turn left onto northbound Farrell Road, but collided with the Toyota, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Scharfenberg a written warning for a stop sign violation.

30 Charges

Police charged a local man with 30 offenses on South Main Street on the evening of June 23.

Police said they saw motorist Dakota France, 21, of 56 Riverside Road driving a vehicle with a broken rear taillamp northward on South Main Street, near Elizabeth Street, at about 7 pm, so they stopped him to investigate.

Police said they charged France with three counts of possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, six counts of possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana, 14 counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, and one count each of misuse of marker plates, driving a vehicle with a defective horn, driving a vehicle with improper taillamps, driving a vehicle with defective tires, failure to have automotive insurance, failure to carry a driver’s license, and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Following processing, police released France from custody on $500 bail for a July 5 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Dodgingtown Incident

Police said they responded to a call reporting a disturbance at a Dodgingtown Road residence near the Bethel town line at about 8 pm on June 23.

In an altercation between two men, one man pushed the other man to the ground, police said. After investigating, police charged Joon Ho Yoon, 48, of Brewster, N.Y., with breach of peace.

Police released Yoon on $100 bail for a July 5 court appearance.

Ox Hill Road

Police said they received a call about 10:30 am on June 22 reporting that at about 12:30 am that morning, someone had entered a motor vehicle that was parked in a driveway at a Ox Hill Road residence and stole some unspecified items from within the vehicle.

Also, the person who stole the items from the vehicle may have attempted to enter the house on the property, police said.

Ox Hill Road is a dirt road that links Mt Nebo Road to Hundred Acres Road.

Police are investigating the incident and ask anyone with information on the matter to contact Officer Scott Smith at 203-426-5841.

Vehicular Violations

While on patrol about 7:30 am on June 22, police spotted motorist Jose Munoz, 23, of New Haven driving a truck on South Main Street that was missing a headlamp and which had a broken taillamp, so they pulled Munoz over on a road in the area to investigate.

Police said they charged Munoz with driving with a suspended license, and also with headlamp and taillamp violations.

Police said they held Munoz on $250 bail for a court appearance that day.

Subaru Vs Chrysler

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Wasserman Way and the Exit 11 ramps for Interstate 84 about 9:40 pm on June 15, police said.

In that incident, motorist Alyssa Kucky, 19, of 53 Spring Trail, who was driving a 1995 Subaru Legacy station wagon, struck the rear end of 2008 Chrysler Pacifica station wagon driven by Janet Ziperstein, 38, of 5 Charter Ridge Drive, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Kucky for following too closely.

SUV Vs Pole

Motorist Gregory Horne, 16, of 56 New Lebbon Road, who was driving a 2007 Honda Pilot SUV northward on New Lebbon Road at about 12:24 pm on June 22, encountered a section of roadway which curved to the right, but he drove straight and struck a utility pole near 14 New Lebbon Road, police report.

Horne was not injured. Police said they verbally warned him for a travel lane violation.

Intersection Crash

Two vehicles collided at the intersection of Church Hill Road and Walnut Tree Hill Road about 1 pm on June 21, according to a police report.

Motorist Jacob Feinstein, 17, of 20 Farm Field Ridge Road, who was driving a 2011 Subaru Impreza station wagon southward on Walnut Tree Hill Road, stopped a stop sign at that street’s intersection with Church Hill Road, police said.

At that time, motorist Livia Alvarez, 41, of 23 Clearview Drive was driving a 1998 Honda Odyssey minivan westward on Church Hill Road, police report.

Alvarez then waved for Feinstein to enter Church Hill Road, but Feinstein did not immediately enter Church Hill Road, police said.

Alvarez then started to accelerate into the intersection, police said. Feinstein then started to enter the intersection, police added.

The Subaru and the Honda collided. There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Feinstein for a stop sign violation.

Button Shop Impact

Motorist Amanda Rivera, 21, of 32 Botsford Hill Road was driving a 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage sedan westward on Button Shop Road at about 9 am on June 21, police said. Motorist Andrew Brackett, 51, of Monroe was driving a 1994 Dodge Dakota pickup truck westward behind the Mitsubishi, police said.

The Dodge attempted to pass the Mitsubishi on the right, resulting in the two vehicles crashing into one another, police said.

 There were no injuries. Police said they gave Brackett an infraction for following too closely and for passing on the right.

Orchard Hill

About 1:47 pm on June 21, a two-vehicle accident occurred near 5 Orchard Hill Road.

Police said motorist Denise Mancini, 41, of New Fairfield, who was driving a 2001 Subaru Legacy station wagon, was exiting a driveway at 5 Orchard Hill Road, as motorist Peter Spath, 66, of 5 Dusty Lane was driving a 2004 Ford Ranger pickup truck westward on Orchard Hill Road.

The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries.

Police said they issued Mancini a written warning for failure to grant the right of way and also verbally warned her for failure to carry an automotive insurance card. Police said they verbally warned Spath for failure to carry an automotive insurance card.

Reckless Driving

State police said that at about 7:55 pm on June 23, they stopped motorist Crystal Anne Davis, 23, of Southbury to investigate on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 11.

State police charged Davis with reckless driving and with second-degree reckless endangerment.

Davis was released on $1,000 bail for a July 2 court appearance.

DUI Arrest

State police said that at about 2:22 am on June 22, they stopped motorist Daniel Engeldrum, 39, of Monroe on westbound Interstate 84 near Exit 9.

After investigating, state police charged Engeldrum with driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane, and with a driver’s license violation.

State police released Engeldrum on $1,000 bail for a July 9 court appearance.

Highway Crash

At about 9:21 am on June 21, motorist Kimberly Knopf, 41, of Oakville, who was driving a 2011 Hyundai Sonata westward on Interstate 84, about 500 feet east of Exit 10, slowed for traffic conditions, after which the Hyundai was hit from behind by westbound motorist Howard Agid, 80, of Southbury, who was driving a 2004 Hyundai Elantra, state police said.

Knopf reported pain, but refused on-scene medical treatment, state police said. State police said they verbally warned Agid for following too closely.

I-84 Evading

State police said that while driving on westbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 10, at about 9 am on June 20, motorist Drew Larowe, 22, of Waterbury, who was driving a 2007 Honda Accord, struck a 2009 Hyundai Elantra driven by a Southbury man and then drove away. There were no injuries.

The Southbury man then followed Larowe to Caraluzzi’s Food Market on Queen Street and police responded to the scene, charging Larowe with evading responsibility, driving with a suspended license, and failure to maintain the travel lane. Larowe is scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges.

Interstate Collision

Motorist Emma Licsak, 66, of Oxford, who was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer SUV eastward on Interstate 84, about 500 feet west of Exit 10, at about 2:44 pm on June 18, slowed for heavy traffic and was then struck from behind by motorist Ryan Healy, 32, of Southbury, who was driving a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta, state police said. 

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

I-84 Rear-Ender

State police said that motorist Rocco Becce, 63, of Thomaston was driving an auto in stop-and-go traffic on eastbound Interstate 84, near the Exit 11 off-ramp, at about 4 pm on June 21, when a 1971 Kenworth tractor-trailer truck driven by Leroy Bowers, 66, of Fairfield, Penn., struck the rear end of Becce’s auto.

There were no injuries. State police said they issued Bowers an infraction for failure to maintain a safe distance apart.

Watch Found

Police report that a Casio-brand black plastic G-Shock model wristwatch was found lying on the ground near the Newtown High School track at about 7 pm on June 24. The owner may claim the item by contacting police Officer John McCluskey at the police station, 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.

Mailbox

A black residential mailbox was found lying along the side of the street near 9 Jeremiah Road on June 26, according to police. To claim the mailbox, the owner should contact police.

Cellphone

Police report that on June 26, they received for safekeeping a blue Nokia-brand cellphone and a black leather cellphone carrying case that were found in the parking lot near the Big Y supermarket at 6 Queen Street. The back surface of the cellphone bears a name and a telephone number. The owner may claim the item by contacting Officer Matthew Pirhala at the police station.

Swamp/South Main

Police report that a two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of South Main Street and Swamp Road about 6:44 pm on June 19.

Police said motorist Danielle Maslar, 38, of Monroe was driving a 2006 Honda Odyssey minivan northward on South Main Street.

At that time, motorist Nicholas Meriano, 49, of 70 Toddy Hill Road was driving a 1988 Chevrolet pickup truck westward on Swamp Road, police said. The Chevrolet then stopped at stop sign on Swamp Road at its intersection with South Main Street, according to police.

The Chevrolet then attempted to make left turn onto southbound South Main Street, but collided with the Honda, police said.

There were no injuries. Meriano received a written warning for failure to grant the right of way, police aid.

Minivan Vs Deer

Motorist Domenico Datillo, 50, of Bethel was driving a 2011 Chrysler Town & Country minivan eastward near 147 Mt Pleasant Road at about 3:50 pm on June 26, when a deer attempted to run across the roadway, resulting in a collision, police said.

Datillo was transported to Danbury Hospital to be checked, police said. No enforcement was taken.

 

Queen/Glover

An accident involving three vehicles occurred at the intersection of Queen Street and Glover Avenue about 4:21 pm on June 22.

Police said motorist Samantha Rohrbacher, 17, of 8 Nighthawk Lane was driving a 1992 Lexus ES-300 sedan southward on Queen Street.

At that time, motorist Virginia Crawford, 65, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2008 Lexus GX-470 SUV eastward on Glover Avenue, stopped at a stop sign on Glover Avenue at its intersection with Queen Street, police report.

The SUV then attempted to make a left turn onto northbound Queen Street, but collided with the sedan, which was heading southward straight through the intersection, police said.

Following that impact, the sedan collided with a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta that was parked in a driveway at 21 Queen Street, police said.

Rohrbacher was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Crawford received an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign, according to police.

Sandy Hook Intersection

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Berkshire Road and Toddy Hill Road about 4:45 pm on June 23, police report.

That collision on Berkshire Road involved motorist Rachael Hyland, 17, of 14 Briarwood Lane, who was driving a 2004 Audi A-4 sedan, and motorist Lori Grasso, 50, of 47 Osborn Hill Road, who was driving a 2011 Cadillac CTS sedan, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police said that they issued Hyland an infraction for following too closely and for  driving a unregistered vehicle.

Swamp Road

Police report that at about 8:09 am on June 22, they stopped motorist J. Loja, 30, of Danbury near 21 Swamp Road in Botsford to investigate; he was charged with traveling too fast and with driving under suspension.

Police released Loja on $250 bail for a July 10 court appearance.

Hanover Road

Police said that at about 2:11 pm on June 24, they spotted motorist Yussuf A. Yussuf, 25, of Brookfield driving 42 miles per hour in a posted 25-mph zone at The Boulevard; he was stopped near 80 Hanover Road to investigate.

Police charged Yussuf with traveling too fast and with driving with a suspended license; he was released on a written promise to appear in court on July 6.

Vandalism/Theft

About 3 am on June 23, someone stole some curbside residential mailboxes and also damaged a mailbox/wishing well structure in the Taunton Hill Road area, according to police.

Police are investigating the incidents and ask anyone with knowledge of the crimes to contact Officer John McCluskey at the police station, 203-270-4236

Saab Vs Deer

Motorist Nathan Behr, 37, of 16 Paugussett Road was driving a 2003 Saab 9-3 sedan westward on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Zoar Road, at about  8 am on June 23, when the vehicle collided with a deer, police said. Police said the accident was reported to them at about 3 pm that day. Behr was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

 

GMC Vs Honda

At about 10:30 am on June 26, motorist Thomas Clark, 53, of Monroe, who was driving a 2011 Honda Accord coupe, was waiting to pull out from the commercial driveway at 151 South Main Street onto the street, when motorist Mark Barnes, 38, of Middletown, who was driving a 2008 GMC pickup truck, backed into the Honda, police report.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.
